Once kids reach remission do they need fiber in their diet?

To all the experienced parents of crohn's children; Once in remission and all is healed, do these little guys need fiber to keep things working correctly...or would that throw everything out of whack? We haven't been given the green light of 'remission' yet, but have noticed that my son has periods of being gassy and soft stools. He is only going once a day with no blood or cramps...but was wondering if he needs some fiber. We've stayed so far from it that now I think his diet is not a real healthy one anymore.

I don't know if I'd say he "needed" it, but after EJ got better, his diet slowly returned to a slightly modified version of normal. He just wasn't growing on the restricted diet that we had him on. We still try to limit his sugar but even that has slid lately. I hope it works out for you guys! EJ has really had quite a growth spurt since last fall!

Hey Kathy,

Hmmm...I reckon diet is one of the hardest things to navigate with this disease. So many differing opinions and most often very strong ones at that! Then on the other hand you run the gauntlet of health professionals not wanting to give a straight answer...oh it may have some effect but then again it mightn't! Ugh, so confusing! :confused2:. At the end of the day it is such a personal thing, what works for one could be a killer for some one else.

In our own case I have worked off the premise that while my kids are in remission then I will provide them with a healthy, well balanced diet. No real extremes of anything. Like anyone, IBD or not, there will always be foods that don't agree with them and those are things I eliminate. My daughter has ongoing issues due to short bowel syndrome and over the years she has gravitated to a vegetarian diet and finally a vegan diet for the last 8 months. It is what suits her best, so plenty of fibre in her diet! A weird thing about it though, although she does use psyllium husks to help bind her, she has found that since moving to vegan she isn't pooping anywhere near as much...go figure!

Much love,

Thanks Dusty and Mark for responding. I'll start to work things back in slowly and see what bothers him and what doesn't. I want him to get a growth spurt. He's still too small, and he's sooo active.

Hey Kathy, if Brian isn't bothered by milk, those Carnation Instant breakfast powders have a lot of nutrition. EJ's GI actually recommended them to us. EJ drank so many that he hates them now:). Don't know why, I think they're great!
