Hey guys in abit of pain today and the usuall advil isn't doing much.
I was just wodering what you have tried/used for pain still waiting to see the quack going on the 19th of jan see what he says

Anyway have tried and not much success with:
Codeneine based - panadine, herron blue etc... theese things constipate the crap out of me and bad gas

Ibuprofen based - Advill, Nurofen etc... ok but the pain goes to a dull ache and not much else.

Paracetamol - well lets just sau waste of money and time.

Aspirin - never tried aspirin not sure if its safe for crohnies

So give me some suggestions to kill this awfull pain I'm hunched over with it and my joints are killing me

Hey Boza,

NSAID's, like Ibuprofen etc, are a no no when it comes IBD due to the potential of them to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. You are also right to stay away from Aspirin, again bleeding issues.

Since you are from Oz, the experience I have have with both of my children has been for the docs to prescribe Endone for pain that cannot be controlled by Panadol. This regime has been common over numerous doctors and 3 different hospitals so I am assuming it must be a stock standard with IBD, well in NSW anyway.

For them Endone has proven to be very effective for moderate to severe pain, both in hospital and at home.

It is an S8 drug so can have the potential to become addictive if taken for long periods of time.

From the type of pain you are describing I don't know that any OTC medication is going to alleviate it.

Good luck!

Dusty. xxx

I, too, have usually gone Paracetamol, Endone, morphine (from medicos and hospitals in Melbourne & Geelong).

Hey Susan,

Yes, the next step for them has been Morphine as well and then working back down to Endone and Panadol.

Digesic (Darvocet) is really mild for your guts, and seems about the same strength as panadeine, with no cramping!

When tylonol doesnt do it, it take hydrocodone. That seems like the standerd thing here in the states. I have never heard of Endone. I googled it and I see it is Oxycodone. Ya doctors seem to prefer Hydrococone over Oxycodone in the states. And many GI doctors don't prescribe pain meds at all. I personally feel that is cruel! Besides meds you could try a heating pad or a warm bath. I hope you find some relief!

I alternate between oxycodone and hydrocodone. I take very low doses just to knock the edge off without making me loopy (2.5mg oxy or 10mg hydro). And I usually only take one pain pill per day. When the pain comes back, I just deal with it.

tylenol and when it gets worse tramadol. if i can't stand it past that i'm usually in for bigger issues... i have a fairly high threshold, as i'm sure we all do at this point.

It's acetaminophen (Paracetamol) available over the counter but is also available here with codeine although this requires a prescription

i'm in a crap load of pain right now its bearable but still not nice can't do much but veg out in my recliner I have to find a better way to manage this

I take tramadol and if it is more severe, then I would take vicodin. If those don't work, then I go to the ER for morphine. A heating pad can also help.

I only have to look at the box of painkillers and I become constipated!! I had sinusitis recently and the only thing that helped was neurofen which I know is a no no for IBD but the benefit for me outweighed the risk . Also try conservative methods distraction heat ice movement massage and acupuncture they can be quite beneficial for pain relief.

I use oxycodone when the pain is bad. And it will slow things down a bit too. Nothing else works as good.

Anybody else ever have any dependency problems with codeine meds like lortab or Vicodin? I have and now this is an issue. I am flaring and probably going to have another surgery soon. What kind of non-codeine meds are out there?

My GI doc is against pain meds.... He says it will cause constipation. But in my opinion after D 20 times daily... I would love some lol... He reccommends I go to pain management. But I will say when in the hospital Morphine dont even touch the pain, they give me dilaudid in IV...

I use something containing Propinox and Clonixin on demand. This is a very soft one I guess.
