I can't sleep tonight because whenever I roll on to my right side, I get a horrible stabby pain just under my ribs on my left. If I roll back on to my left it quickly disappears again. Any ideas?

Hi Rebecca,

I used to have this problem also when in a flare. I actually can't remember which side hurt and which side I used to have to stay on, but it was always the same situation whenever I was in a flare.

I just assumed at the time it had to do with the inflammation and how the flare was impacting the intestines in a certain location that made it so uncomfortable to be on one side.

I used to just stay exclusively on the one side that did not hurt and would suggest you try doing that as well. Over time (minutes later or several days depending on the flare) I would feel better and be able to lay on both sides without pain.

Does it hurt when you press onto your ribs or onto your abdomen just below your ribs? Can you make it hurt by twisting or taking a deep breath?
Are you short of breath?

I couldn't lay on my right side before my surgery. I had a stricture around the right lower abdomen and it hurt quite bad to lay on that area.

I can't sleep on my left side. I can maybe lay on it for 15 min, before my bowels start hurting below my ribs. Been that way for years. But I have scloriosis of the spine, and I think because my ribs are lip sided a bit, they press on my colon maybe.
But ye, I had ilium rescected, and most my crohns bowel probs on the right, but I sleep on it fine. If pain is really bad, I lay on my stomach, cos on back is horrid, and the right side too, unless I'm elevated on a heap of pillows. Maybe after your flare yours will settle though, but I'm used to never laying on my left now :)

Thanks, guys. Well I did manage to get some sleep at last (though not as much as I'd have liked!) I think I must have eaten something that disagreed, because I'm not in a flare, and haven't had this particular pain before.

Little miss- it doesn't hurt when I press or anything like that. Breathing makes it worse if I'm lying on my right, but not when I'm on my left so I don't think it's anything too serious.
