Hi There

Just started back on Asacol yesterday and this morning when i took my 2 pills. I went to the toilet half an hour later and i noticed one of the tablets in the pan.
Does this mean my body is rejecting them? and should i stop taking them?

Thanks for any input.

Nicky

I get that all the time and I was told by my consultant not to worry about it as they are ghost capsules as the medication within the capsule seemingly goes into your system pretty instantly. If you see this everytime you take them then you should give your IBD nurse a call just in case

It's happened to me on a few ocassions. I think the covering passes through undigested but opens up in the gut exposing the active ingredient / medication to the inflammed area. That is why they (Salofalk anyway) say do not chew or crush.

Are you US or UK-based? You can get an alternative formulation - which is a slow release granule - I've had much better absorption with this type, but don't know if they have it in the States. Have to say that it's a bit like swallowing cat litter though!

I agree with the above posts... Happens to me sometimes.... kinda gross, but once I poked at one to see if I was actually getting the med (be carefule which pen you use at my house, haha) and sure enough it was just the capsule and nothing in it. Pretty weird to see though.

Asacol opens in the intestine my GI told me. He told me you will see the capsules in your stools sometimes.:ywow:

Hi folks .
Asacol breaks down at a PH of 7( which is an acidic value . This takes place at several places in the GI tract. Namely the TI and the colon and also at the anus. The coating is precisely that, a protection until it reaches its intended destination with in the GI tract . The coating breaks down at the said PH 7 and the med is released. This is generally so . I have been on this for two years now and still from time to time find capsules partly disolved in my pooh. I am told this is very common and not something to worry about . If your concerned though do ask your doctor.

I remember my GI not being happy with the fact I was passing them. It is not your body rejecting them, it is more a problem of it being able to assimilate them though. I believe it would be cautious to specify it to your specialist.

Cheers

I did it again today and under close inspection (bolk), i noticed the pill had a big crack down the side asif it had opened but it wasnt empty.

Is this normal?

As far as I am aware the break down of the pill coating is a simple chemical reaction . As i said before it breaks down at a PH of 7. Now i did have issues a while ago when i was gettin alot of Gerd. i got some Wheat grass from a Health food store which was supposed to lower my acidic level. This helped the Gerd but I started to find the tabs in the toilet un disolved. So maybe it could be a imbalance in the acidic level in your GI tract or an issue with some of the organs that produces the acid like the Gaul bladder. Maybe your should approach your doctor about this to see if there is another cause for this .
