I recently had a friend tell me that a teenager that was just diagnosed with crohns was told never to eat peanut butter again. Does anyone know why this would be? I eat a lot of peanut butter always seems to b okay w/ but recently have been having flare an I have been eating peanut butter almost every day:ybatty: would appreciate any imput thanks:ycool:

Rosalyn wasn't feeling great to begin with, ate a PB sandwich Thursday last week & seemed to get worse with diarrhea through the night into Friday... then ate one Sunday night & was either back in or just staying with the symptoms by Monday morning. I don't know if it's peanut butter or something else???

It was smooth peanut butter, not crunchy. I thought the problem was the sharp texture of nuts. Idk, I'm such a noob I constantly feel like maybe I'm killing my child... I hope I didn't "do this" latest bout of misery to her.

Definitely need to find out. ESP after what you just said. They asked about crunchy or smooth pediatric GI doc said all peanut butter never eat again. I am GI nurse have never heard this. Do not know the reasoning behind but, do not blame yourself. I am grown have crohns an it is always a trial whenever u r talking food so far I have found that when u have issues stay away from that food for a a while reintroduce when you r problem free, problems again avoid that food. It is all trial an error. You r not to blame. I have been eating creamy all natural peanut butter an have never thought it has caused me trouble. It is high in protein supposedly good for you. But after I heard what ped. GI doctor said makes me Leary an I want to know why? If I find answer will post for you:) good luck

Hmmm. I'm very interested in the replies to this question. My son (age 10) was diagnosed with Crohn's two weeks ago and peanut butter sandwiches are about the only thing he feels like eating. We are using smooth peanut butter and staying clear away from any pieces of the actual nut. So far they seem like one of the only things that hasn't given him abdominal pain in the last few weeks.

Chunky peanut butter was intended, perhaps?

Diet is very personal when it comes to IBD I am finding. Peanut butter is not only one of my favorite foods, but something I reaaaaally crave when I'm flaring (I have found that I crave things my body needs when I'm flaring, so I try to listen to it... it's usually proteins, like pb, tuna, etc.) Anyway, I would stick with the way it affects your friend's teenager. It's usually ok for me personally, but individual diet items seems so dependent on the individual and circumstance.

Hii,

My GI and doctor's all recommended eating peanut butter because it has minerals and substances that any nuts in general, which Crohnies are not allowed to eat considering the texture and hardness of the nut would scrape the lining of the inflammations and intestinal walls, would help. Plus with a natural jam mixed with it, gives extra vitamins we all lack. So, I really do not know, even my parents have researched the issue and found that we should have Peanut butter, the smooth kind with no pieces in it, because its healthy and provides us with things our bodies need.
Good luck on the research, I will try to add more information if I find anything on the topic.

kisses, Aya

I've never had a problem with it. However to be honest, I don't really like PB. Every once in awhile I will crave a PB&J, and don't recall ever having a problem with it.

I should note, like others said, I eat smooth PB

Personally speaking, peanut butter riles up my acid reflux and it isn't super easy on my guts either. I switched to almond butter and have no problems with that. It's my understanding that almond butter is a "healthier fat" than peanut butter is (peanuts and almonds are totally different types of nuts or a peanut isn't even a real nut, something like that anyway). So yeah, I found that switching to almond butter was better for me.

I think a lot of people have allergic reactions to peanut butter. I used to love it, but I know I can't eat it anymore. Very sad.

My guess is the advice to stay away from it might have something to do with allergens?

Thanks for all your imput. I get heartburn from peanut butter on occasion however, no other GI related symptoms I knew about. Have had some issues lately but I have been cheating eating stuff I know I shouldnt. So when friend told me that just thought I should look deeper b/c I do eat a lot of it, def. Don't want to irritate an already sticky situation. Def. Need to try almond butter, not a big fan of almonds so have been hesitant to try, but a lot of my coworkers love it as well, so much better for ya:)

I really wonder if a lot of crohns sufferers problems are mostly rooted in severe allergies. I am going to take your advise traverse stay away from it for a while an see how it goes an then when feeling better again will try it again an see how it goes. Thanks:)

Girun, I'm not a big fan of almonds either, but almond butter is really good. I like almond milk too, I drink that a lot as I can't do regular milk due to lactose intolerance. Give almond butter a try even if you aren't an almond fan, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Wow! I had never heard of this. I can imagine not eating crunchy when you have active inflammation (I was told not to eat any nuts) because it is an irritant, but I have never heard the no peanut butter at all ever rule. Peanut butter is such a good source of protein!

Also almond butter is DELICIOUS, although expensive. I'm partial to maple almond butter from Justin's Nut Butter spread on apples. Heavenly!
