I am just curious if anyone else has ever had an allergic reation to Pentasa?

I took my first dose and within 6 hours I had hives and my throat got very itchy and swollen.

I have heard of people being allergic to it, but not sure to what extent. I would contact the doctor straight away (a&e if needs be), and wouldnt take anymore until they tell you otherwise

Yes I have seen my Dr several times since this, I was just curious if anyone else had had reaction.

My Dr has said I will not be able to go on any of the 5 ASA's. The sad thing is after the first dose the next day was a great day for me. No pain and the swelling in my stomach was cut by half.

I have heard that some people are allergic to Pentasa. What medication is your doctor going to try next? I also take Entocort EC in addition to the Pentasa. The combination works great for me.

I have just finished a round of Entocort. I see my GI this month and we will see what the next med's will be. My Crohn's is definatly not in remission right now.

Do you mind if I ask what your symptoms are? I'm always curious to see if others have the same symptoms that I have when I'm flaring. I seem to have a lot of hip and back pain, nausea and fatigue.

Hi,yes I cannot take Pentasa anymore, after 18 months I developed serious Liver problems and developed Hepatitus (drug induced Hepatitus),I was mortified.
The Gastro said after bloods done,it was the Pentasa, funny tho for quite a few months,I was waking up in the morning with blood on my pillow,it worried me a little then,I thought my stomach was bleeding, which can happen with aspirin based drugs, also had the problem afew years ago with salazapyrin which is related to Pentasa, another sulfate drug, and it also affected my liver.
So now no 5ASA drugs for me anymore,I am on azathioprine 100mg and not too bad at all with them,

Good luck, hope they can sort you out soon

Hi Sugarberry,

My symptoms during a flare are flank pain on the right side(it's a burning pain by my bottom rib)Nausea, abdominal pain, D and major fatigue all the time. My flare ups are very sudden onset as well. I never can really predict when they will happen. If I have something very important to do I make sure not to eat anything new as this usually causes a flare up.

I hope this helps, I have felt so much better knowing I am not the only 1 that feels the way I do.

I don't know if this counts but when I was younger I was on pentasa for a while. As soon as I made the decision to quit treatment, I felt instantly better and thought I was in remission. Honestly I was only 8 years old so I can't remember how it felt on it. My current GI speculates that I had a reaction to Pentasa and that it exacerbated my Crohn's symptoms so when I stopped taking it I felt loads better. Now I have all 5-ASA drugs listed as an allergy. Don't know if my response helps at all though! :(

I stopped taking Pentasa off my own back in 2010, much to the disgust of my Specialist. We argued about the benefits (or lack thereof) for about 18 months. I was convinced they made no difference to me and am wary in general of taking any medication long-term. About 12 months ago I started with a serious flare-up and started taking them again in desperation. On seeing my Specialist he told me of new research showing that Pentasa is actually of little use in treating Crohn's in the small intestine! Still of use in large intestine and colon as its slow release. Of course I felt massively vindicated!
