Hi again everyone,

so I posted the other day, saying that I was admitted into the hospital because I had a flare up. While I was being admitted they took blood and in the blood they found a bacterial infection.

Well today, just now they told me that I came into the hospital with a bacterial infection. Since I have no cuts or wounds the only thing they can think of is this:

this type of bacteria they say every person carries it. However when I started having a flare up, the inflammation made the lining weak...which instead of excreting the bacteria like normal is got absorbed through the weak lining into my blood stream.

I am freaking out. This is day 5 in the hospital I am getting very worried and emotional about everything. I was wondering if anyone has gone through anything like this or knows someone who has. What can I except to happen? I am having trouble finding things online about it. If you can help, please do!!! :sign0085:

I'm sorry you are feeling so ill and in the hospital :(

What is the name of your bacterial infection if you don't mind me asking ? Maybe someone can help you with information regarding it if we now the specifics :)

Hang in there ! :)

Everyone carries the staph bacteria, they are right. However, someone elses staph can make you very sick indeed! I managed a staff infection after surgery from the visiting nurses in my home, my body didnt like their germs.

Are you feeling any better after a few days of antibiotics? Any improvement?

:hang:

If they know what the bacteria is they will also know what antibiotic to use an so you should feel better soon. A lot of infections are caused by our own organsims from one part of our body being cheeky little buggers and getting into where they shouldn't be. for example most urine infections are caused by our gut organisms getting up into the bladder etc.
Hope you feel better soon.

And also cos we're too clean these days! Doesn't make sense does it?
That's why most anti biotics are useless in the fight.
I had an infection in hospital last year (dunno what) and Metronidazole (Flagyl) saved my life.
It's an antibiotic too, but fab at chomping down parasitic infections.
hope you feel better soon

Hey everyone,

again... I really appreciate all of you responses. Today is day 7 of being in the hospital and just last night they cleared me from having a staph infection. They still think I have a small infection that was caused by my inflamed intestines. So after no physical contact with anyone unless they had gloves and a gown on... that part is gone.

They infection they think I have now is some type of abscess growing outside of my intestine. As of right now they are not too worried about it and think that once everything calms down so will that.

They also think that because of all the junk going on with my intestines that it has worked my gallbladder into a fit. After tests they have determined that it is not something that needs to be operated on or anything, just I need to take better care of myself and not let things get this bad.

I understand I came here for help, but I seems like the second they look at something they see something else wrong :( ugh! I just wanna leave and keep up to date on my meds and recover in my own bed! I will continue to keep you updated. I hope that everyone is doing well themselves!

Hey Astra101, I had a bad do with Metronidazole, felt terrible, diarrohhea increase x 3. Really couldn't wait to be off it. But as you say it does its job by cleaning out the bugs that us Crohnies appear so susceptible to.
Get well soon misfit kt, sounds like you've been through the mill.

cant believe the said not to worry about abscess it must be tiny? are u on any antibitiocs at the moment? did u have ct scan done to prove was an abscess?

only diagnosed feb and all this happened already had it up to my neck with crohns already every week something dif happens another infection, reaction starting to give up..

i hope u have better luck than i do.. spending my 20th birthday in hospital was'nt so fun :(

Well, I am out of the hospital. I was released yesterday night. 8 days total in the hospital. They think my infection outside of the intestine was growing before I went in. It is not a staph infection like they originally thought. The tests cleared that. However because of the infected abscess outside of my intestine, it started to mess with all my other organs.

It made my intestines inflamed
It made my ovary enlarged
It made my gallbladder enlarged and thickened
It lead to a UTI
And they were worried it would lead to my heart - but an echo cardio gram was negative

The doctor said that me not taking my medication regularly did help lead to this flare up. However he is mad and confused at my normal GI doctor. He had me on Asacol and Folic Acid for the past 2 1/2 years. The ER doctor said that Asacol is not targeted to where my disease is. He was very mad because in his opinion Asacol alone should not have been my medication. Even if I took it regularly - this would have still happened being solely on Asacol.

He now has me on Pentasa and Folic Acid as my regular drugs. For the next month along with those I will be on Predisone, Vitamin D, Prenatal Vitamins, Pro-biotics, and 2 anti-biotics Vancomycin and Avelox. They said that I am deficient in Vitamin D, B and Iron. While on the Vancomycin I need to have a picc in my arm and give myself the IV twice a day. I guess it is too strong for pills and can only be given in IV form.

To clearify, they are worried about the infected abscess that it was the Vancomycin is for. Along with that anti biotic they think it will get better as my intestines get better. I think when I ment to say was the UTI they are not worried about, since I am on 2 different anti-biotics that they will zap the UTI. That is all I can think of as to why I said they weren't worried - I was on some heavy pain killers at the time :ylol:

Now, my next question is this... I went from using pain killers as need in the hospital even the day I was released.. but the doctor did not send me away with anything. Is this normal? So that I do not rely on them? Should I just try to use tylonal? Or should I ask for some? I don't want him to think I am a junky now or anything...but I am still in pain.

It sounds like you've really been thru the wringer all right! I am surprised they didnt give you a weeks worth of some form of pain relief as well. I would guess they want you to visit your normal Dr ASAP for follow up? I think you should go to them on Monday.

Meanwhile, please dont take tylenol. It can inflame your gut. Please take paracetamol instead. Any ibuprofen can irritate your gut. (dont ask me how I know this!)

Glad you are out of the hospital! Keep us posted on your progress please, and hang in there!

Misty - Just to clarify, Paracetamol IS Tyelnol/acetominophen.

misfit_kt- Tylenol is our best bet to take. Avoid Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen), and Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). If Tylenol isn't cutting it for your pain, ask your doc. What were they giving you in hospital?

Paracetamol IS Tylenol....I think Misty might be confused.......

It is true ibuprofin should NOT be used - or any NSAID.......

I believe I was Demerol for pain while in the hospital, if not that then it is something else with a "D". Today has been pretty rough, if I can't get some relief I am going to have to call monday.

Hang in there misfit_kt I am glad to hear you are out of the hospital. If the Tylenol does not help it does not hurt to ask for something stronger on Monday, I don't think they will think you are a junkie, do your best to stay upbeat, being positive is a very powerful medicine in itself.

Hello Misfit. I was diagnosed after being hospitalised for severe abdominal pain about 2 and a half yrs ago. I had a small rupture of the bowel that had allowed some leakage to seep out into my body resulting in an abscess right on outside wall of my bowel. It was extremely painful and made me feel so icky. I wouldnt allow the doctors to touch me I was in so much pain and after scans they decided to drain the abscess. Apparently the poison had started to reach my blood stream which could have been fatal had I not showed up when I did. I was severely dehydrated too. The abscess was drained via CT scan( yes whilst I was awake) which was a very weird experience. After draining the abscess I was on antibiotics for about four months, and pain relief for about 12 months daily. I was taking a slow release drug which built up in my system. You would definately be requiring some pain relief and dont be ashamed to ask. You are in control of your own body and whatever works if required I would say use it. Any relief when you are suffering is better than no relief!!! The follow up test showed that my abscess has cleared although stricturing and discovering it was crohns that had caused the abscess is an ongoing issue for me. Talk to your GP about what kind of pain relief you can take whilst having this disease as they should be able to guide you in the right direction, I always ask the pharmacist too when I am lodging prescription to make doubly sure. If all else fails ask the hospital to prescribe something for the pain. Phone them and let them know you need something. Good luck with it all and keep us updated.

This morning I spoke with my at home nurse, and she agreed with you all that any pain right now while trying to recover is not ok. She will call my doctor monday morning on my behalf. She also has to call him because my level of vancomycin building up in my system are about half what the levels should be. So I assume this means I need a bigger dose or for a longer period of time. Scary to think that this infection is so strong it is fighting with this medication that I need more of it!

Snookums, your situation sounds very similar to mine. I was in such pain that even a light touch I would burst into (more) tears. Touching my belly didn't get them too far needless to say and a CT scan quickly after showed all the inflammation and an abscess.

I can not thank all of you enough, being my first major flare up I was/ am so scared and worried. Although I don't wish this upon anyone, it is nice to hear from caring people who have been there. I am in such misery that I booked an immediate flight for my mommy to come visit me. I'm 24 and thought I could handle it on my own, but I need the comfort of my mommy through this too!

Yep its not nice is it.

You are atronger than you actually think misfit believe me.

I f i can do it (and i am a man) then you can, that is a fact !!

Lots of love and hugs

Hello again Misfit.
I just had to send you my story as it was ringing bells for me reading yours. Im so glad they are going to sort out some pain relief for you. YOU NEED IT! Fair shout in flying your mum out, at this particular time in your life you will need lots of love and support. Its one thing to be experiencing symptoms, buts its another to get your head around what really is going on. Be patient, take each day as it comes and enjoy those moments when you are feeling really well. Unfortunately you just never know what direction this disease is going to take you into next so try to make your life as normal as you possibly can. Remember you have the support of the crohnnies here to help as best we can. Take care and hope you start feeling better real soon!!

Perfect! Hope they got you something, as yes, internal abcesses are VERY painful!!

We also need to remember that, because you are on medications that are going to inhibit your immune system, this is going to take a LONG time to heal. We need to be on the meds that slow down the immune system to help battle the IBD - but because we are on these meds, it interferes with our "natural healing" processes that would help us help the antibiotics to work - so it is a big vicious circle. Some doctors (like mine did) may decide to pull you off your IBD meds until the infection is gone - but some (like my brother's doctor) choose to treat both at the same time - either way - because our "natural fighting" system doesn't work so good - it takes a long time for some of us to fight off even the smallest of infections.... it sounds like you have an awesome at home nurse - be sure and ask her all the questions you have because I think she is going to be a huge support for you! :)

As long as as there is gradual improvement, your doctor will know you are moving in the right direction. But it IS going to take a long time, Sweetie, - months even, so just take each day as you can.

Big squishy hugs from the Moon, and hoping mom is there for the real hugs....
