I have chrohn's and IBS. I have inflamation in the colon and rectum, therefore it is most often difficult to poop. I had a horrific flare this past January and February that drove me to start smoking....again. It helped ease the flare as it got the bowels moving again. Now that I have been smoking for several months my IBS is totally out of control with severe cramping, bloating and 8-12 bowel movements per day often comprised of just mucus. Doc says the IBS will calm if I stop smoking - which I tried a few times within the last month (with the patch of course) only to find myself unable to poop again. Perhaps it is largely psychological - but it is no secret smoking has an analgesic reaction.

Any ideas???

Thanks

tums sometimes has a negative effect on the bowel. It is not meant for long term. Try drinking ginger water (make tea and then either refrigerate, drink room temp or hot). That can help calm the stomach. Daily drinks for a week may help a bit. Add more veggies to the diet and ease back on meats may also help constipation. As you ease of smoking improve diet and perhaps that will help.

Try Bikram Wind Removing pose (google it) daily and that should also help. I do it twice a day and it makes a difference. good luck!

I'm just wondering whether using a different NRT would help- the patch delivers steady nicotine, something like gum or an inhalator or an electronic cigarette delivers a burst of nicotine similar to that experienced by smoking. If that helped you poop, you could then work on lowering the NRT gradually and wean your bowels off!
