Poor sleep linked to Crohn’s disease relapse, not ulcerative colitis

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

poor sleep is an effect of relapse. the difference is in location of disease, b12, magnesium essential fatty acids and vitamin d are mainly absorbed at the ileum. b12 is recylced at the ileum. when inflammation is high, malabsorption from inflammation and mucus production will cause worsening sleep/functioning in crohns patients.

It could be an effect of a flare but someone might have poor sleep due to their schedule and or inability to fall asleep and that also possibly triggers flares at least according to this piece.

there was a study about this once, our body is a type of clock...there's this extensive study about it...I can find it if anyone really cares, your immunse system works very differently at night

I don't know how to interpret this study though.

crohn's disease flare -> bad sleep pattern

bad sleep pattern -> crohn's disease flare

It's pretty important to know what is causing what if you want to draw any conclusion. Is the sleep pattern influencing crohn's disease or crohn's disease influencing the sleep pattern.

Kiny I would imagine it could easily work both ways.

You are in pain and running to the bathroom waking up at night which makes your sleep quality poor.

The reverse could be that you don't get much sleep, get runned down and your already sensitive immune system flares.
