prednisone how fast does it work?

this may seam pretty bizzarre !! i am curently undiagnosed !!!!

I have a lovely gp who has suggested crohn's all along , anyway long story short , lots of CD symptoms and anal skin tags ( only just found by my gp ..i have seen 3 consultnats not one has looked at my bottom !! )

gp says these are very common in crohns and IBD and never seen in IBS so he is happy to give me some prednisone to try to see if it helps my two main symptoms right sided pain ( awful ) and dia at least 10 times a day

Well im am on day 4 of a 4 week course and i just cant belive it i have formed poo and pain has decreased enough to stop pain meds ?? can it really work this fast ? and what happens when i stop taking it will it all go back ?? xx

usually works quite quickly. However, everyone may respond differently. Most important that you advise your doc if you have any odd symptoms (joint swelling, etc.) as you are weaned from the prednisone. Can have some nasty side effects if taken off too quickly. Keep doc posted if any trouble! good luck!

thanks mickey , i just cant belive it , a year of awful pain ( not to mention a good 4 years of on and off symptoms !) and toilet trips and IBS banded about i cant belive a few skin tags has moved me over to the IBD meds and now this wonder drug ..... why why couldnt they just given me it before haha !! i really hope this calmed the suspected inflammation and it stays that way !! xx

Fosterschick,
Prednisone is one of the best drugs out there. I wish I could still be on it today. While still undiagniosed, the doctor put me on it (60 mg/day). Within a day and a half, I was so much better. As for getting off it, you have to be weaned; you cannot go "cold turkey." I was finally able to get off it completely once I started taking lialda. If you aren't already on Crohn's drugs, you probably will be soon. After that, Prednisone will most likely be used only for severe flares. Good luck.

thanks switalski , i am hoping with all the info and support my consultant will finally diagnose me and i can keep using this pred wen i have flares ! but my consultant likes the IBS diagnosis too much !! xx

With my past minor flare a 5 day course of 40mg/day would bring it under control and then Pentasa would maintain the remission. This last flare 4 weeks of a tapering course made no difference and colonoscopy revealed much more severe disease. I am now settled on 40mg per day and 4mg Pentasa and things are slowly improving. I am hoping by the time I see my consultant on the 13th he'll be happy for me to continue rather than going on Azaththioprine with a view to coming off the Pred over time.

Absolutely! If any Dr ever says IBD to me again I will scream. I decided long ago they default to that when they don't havea clue what is going on.

hello just an update all , been to see the 'everything is IBS' consultant , and told him about anal skin tags and responce to pred , he never mentioned IBS after that but when i asked if pred helped IBS he said ' not really they work on inflammtion but if they work for you stay on them ' he even said my GP could give me more on my next flare and to go back for the camera when i get bad again !!!

for me this is a result from this consultant as i get meds that work for me and not just more IBS talk

My GP says he is pretty much saying its IBD not IBS as he wouldnt let me stay on a drug like pred just cos it makes me feel happy there are too many side effects !!
so i guess now i have accepted i have some form of bowel disease

Just a note to all who have to deal with GPs giving IBS diagnosis. I live in the UK and if you think you may have crohns or colitis you must insist on being referred to a gastronomic specialist at your nearest hospital as they are the only people who can treat you the correct and most efficient way.
Don't waist time with GPs, if necessary go to A+E/ER to get fast tracked into the system. Slow diagnosis just makes things worse and is unnecessary.
