Hi all,
My son is 12 and is newly diagnosed. He did not respond to budesonine. He started 50mg of tablet prednisone on 12/27. He is very sick to his stomach. Is this a common side effect and will it calm down? He actually feels worse.

Should I consider the elemental diet instead? I'm thinking the feeding tube would be the way to go. Any advice is very appreciated or any info on the EEN and your experiences.

Thanks
Joeys Mom

Doesn't he have egid as well???
If so did they give a ppi to combat the harsh effects of pred on the stomach?
Depending on what ppi it could be triggering his egid.
Pred is hard on the stomach but needs time to work .
A few days is really not sufficient amount of time for it to do the job.
Both take at least two weeks or more to start working even then it could be up to 6-8 weeks.
EEN will still take as long if not longer.
Is he still eating a full diet ?
Egid can cause a lot of stomach issues.

EEN is good . We did it but it will still cause nausea from the crohn's but
Would treat his egid so who knows.

Yes, he does have EGID but his stomach has not felt this bad in awhile and I have no experience with prednisone. Yes, he takes Prilosec daily. Someone suggested slippery elm to me but I wanted to talk to the doc first. I'll give the prednisone a fair chance, I just want a miracle :(
Thanks

I wish you could get a miracle sooner .
It took us a year to get ours :(

Ask about zofran
That may help with the nausea.
Hot packs the kind for backs you microwave
Help with the pain to sleep with on their stomachs .

The hot packs are great and I got one for xmas which he used yesterday, I'll have him sleep with it tonight. I'll ask about zofran, thanks so much.

Hey - back in the throes of Claire on prednisone, we had to switch from Prilosec to Prevacid. Im embarrassed to say I can't remember exactly what was different between them but the switch really helped her.

It will get better.

Hugs,

J.

PS Glad you're checking with the doc before throwing slippery elm in the mix. :)

Joeysmom, I'm sorry he's feeling so horrible. I think prednisone can be hard on the stomache. ((((hugs))) I hope he gets some relief soon. I hate watching our kids suffer.

Joeys mom,
Have to second devynnsmom in saying that prednisone can be really hard on the stomach. Make sure he takes it with food. My daughter found it more tolerable if she took it with yogurt. Maybe the probiotics in the yogurt help it digest better.

Hi just wanted to welcome you to the forum. Pred was rough on my son's stomach in the beginning too. He wad nauseated a lot when we first started but it evened out after a week. We started on 40mg, he was 15 at the time. I think what most bothered him was the restless hyperness he experienced when taking it. Hope he finds relief soon.

HI and welcome. Sorry to hear your son isn't feeling good. I have no experience with Pred, my son did the EN (Modulen) for 8 weeks exclusively. It is really worth trying the EN if your son is struggling with Pred. It is hard mentally to go without food, but it does end and for us it really worked.
Does your son take the Pred with food. Sometimes it's good to take strong tablets straight after a meal so it doesn't irritate the stomach as much.
Hope he feels better.

hi there, would just like to add.. i had the same problem with preds and my stomach and my doctor told me to take them with a bananna and that helped me lots.

and they also took about 3 weeks to start kicking in. so im sure your son will start feeling the benefits soon

Hi Gingermom.

My son did not suffer with this side effect when taking Pred but over time the time I have on the forum I have read on numerous occasions of children suffering with this same problem your lad is having.

Many are prescribed PPI's (e.g. Prilosec, Prevacid) to alleviate the problem either if or when the symptoms appear or some GI's will automatically prescribe when the Pred is prescribed.

EEN is certainly a just as effective alternative.

Good luck! I hope you boy soon finds long and lasting relief.

Bananas are acid reducer, we used them to kick the PPIs eventually it took a long time after coming off the Pred though.

We also were prescribed a PPI with Predisone, I didn't really notice a difference in the beginning it wasnt until 6 months later when we were told she didn't need the PPIs anymore that she had belly aches.

Best of luck to you.

I hope your son feels better. When my son was on prednisone a few years ago (for a possible Corhn's dx) he felt much worse. He was 12 and took 10mg three times daily. By day 3, all of his symptoms returned much worse than they ever were (diarrhea, pain in joints, headache, etc.) He was on the 30mg daily for 2 weeks (begging to stop it) then we started a 2 week wean. During the wean his symptoms slowly started returning to normal. Doctors are not certain why he had this reaction to prednisone. At the time I thought it was because he had some type of infection that was the cause. It has been suggested that perhaps it was a prednisone allergy. I've only come across 2 other forum members with such an adverse reaction to prednisone ... neither were firmly dx w/ Crohn's.

You have had some great suggestions; just wanted to say welcome and hope things clear up soon!
Also, our doc was fairly reluctant to give Zofran but we took Prevacid and it worked wonders. :)

Thanks to you all for the suggestions and encouragement. He is taking Prilosec but I do have Prevacid which I can switch him to if the stomach aches continue. He said his stomach is an 11 on a scale of 1-10 which he has never said before. He takes the pred with his morning oatmeal but I will add a banana, I didn't know they are an acid reducer. The doc ok'd the slippery elm and said it couldn't hurt and could help relieve some pain as it helps calm down the insides. I'll keep you all posted on his progress. Thanks again! Big hugs to you all.

Update on Joey- We are on day 7 of the prednisone. He is taking all 50mg in the morning. We moved his Prilosec to the morning and added a banana so he takes both with the prednisone and gluten free oatmeal and I think it's doing the trick! Thank you all so so so much for the suggestions! He is feeling better!:thumleft:

Hello
I am new to all this but I just wanted to add my daughter is on the generic version of prednisone and it is a liquid the only side effect is hot flashes. Thought you might want to ask about the liquid version. Hope this helps!

Julia
Pred is pred - whether it is generic or liquid or pills. Unfortunately :(
Each person can have varying side effects to pred and those side effects can change from one pred course to another unfortunately.
Some side effects are more common than others.
The higher the dose and the longer the person is on the pred the more likely the side effects will show up.
One side effect as you pointed out are hit flashes or night sweats.
Some have trouble sleeping
Mood swings
Water retention
Crushing syndrome( swelling)
Weight gain
Headaches
Glaucoma
Diabetes
And the list goes. On and on.
I have a love hate relationship
With pred ...
