Hello,

I’m currently trying to taper my prednisone after a Crohn’s flare in March 2018.

I was on humira, but had terrible side effects so stopped, which then caused a flare, and I’ve been on steroids since March.

I managed to get down to 15-10mg keeping the inflammation mostly under control. 3 weeks ago my docs gave me an infusion of Ustekinumab, and I tried tapering to 7.5mg and was able to! I hadn’t been able to get below 10mg without my symptoms coming back so this was great!

I did 7.5mg for 5 days and then gave 5mg a go, and I seemed fine, so after at week at 5mg, I’ve tried 2.5mg on Sunday for the last 2 days I’ve felt awful. Can’t sleep, achy and headaches.

Do I need to slow down the taper, maybe go back to 5mg or power through?

The Crohn’s symptoms have largely remained at bay, other than a few twinges, which considering I was also put on iron in the last two weeks seems like a miracle! :)

Any advice would be appreciated please - thank you!

Wow, I'm impressed you haven't had Crohn's symptoms! I cannot taper off Prednisone without being on another drug. For anyone having trouble tapering the last 10-15 mg I'd highly suggest asking for Prednisone Intensol, which is liquid and you can taper as slow as you want. It's over $100, so good luck with insurance, but hopefully you only need one bottle to taper the last 10-15mg. Also, the only way to get this medicine down without massive gagging is orange juice.
