My 14 year old daughter with CD just started her period 2 months ago and it is causing her excruciating pain, nausea and vomiting. The pains are differ from her normal CD pains. She describes them as a blown up balloon in her stomach along with cramping. I researched online and read that primrose oil capsules will help. Also, it said birth control pills may help. I thought my daughter's becoming a woman would be joyous, but now it is not the case. I can't imagine her having to suffer monthly like this. Any suggestions?

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter is dealing this Marisa, how awful for her. :ghug:

Unfortunately for some painful periods are the norm. :(

The other thing to consider is that although the symptoms differ from the CD for your daughter there are many women here that do find an exacerbation of symptoms at the time of their period. Have a look at the Females-OB/GYN forum as there are many threads about the issue of Crohn’s and periods:

The contraceptive pill certainly can work to alleviate painful periods as can primrose evening oil. This is a good all round article on menstrual pain and available treatments. The only one that would be contraindicated with Crohn’s would be the use of NSAID’s:

..It isn’t surprising to find that there are inclusions under supplements and Herbs that are also identified as useful in the Crohn’s due to their anti inflammatory properties, those being…Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin D, Magnesium and Turmeric.

A hot water bottle or heat pack over the lower abdomen and/or back can be helpful.

I hope you are able to soon find something that provides relief for your daughter, bless her and please keep us posted with how you get on. Good Luck!
