I am about to try "Accuflora" which is an Acidophilus strain it says. Anyone have any experience with these?

Are there any other ProBiotics you guys reccommend?

And isn't this the same thing that is in yogurt?! Is there any point in me taking this if I currently eat yogurt?

I take VSL#3...I have no idea about your brand....I've heard others take the Align brand as well.

VSL-3 is a pharmaceutical grade probiotic, and contains far more active cultures than any other probiotic.

It is not cheap, from what i have heard.

My Dr. has me on Florastor.

Which is not cheep, it runs about $40 USD for a 25 day supply.

I should add that I have really noticed a difference since taking it. I stopped for two weeks because I couldn't afford it and I really felt the difference.

I have the double strength stuff so it is prescription only. My co-pay was $55.
I think the regular strength is around $75

Yes Dan you are right... here in Canada it is $88 dollars for 30 and have to order a minimum of 2 plus shipping so that is around $205.00... however it is 450billion probiotics and I heard in the states as IMP is using it and they have double the probiotics which is 900 billion! She can get it through prescription, we dont have that here in Canada....but maybe some day.

It works for me along with the odd flagyl, when you have been on countless drugs like I have been using for 17 years and avoiding a 3rd surgery, you can't put a price on that. I am 100% covered on drugs... any drug but I would rather not be on them. Who knows my Crohns may get out hand one day. Until then, if it aint broke dont fix it. My Gi said I could try LDN but my pains from PMS are way over the top and need tylenol 3's for about 3 days but only half a pill a day helps.

A lot of people do recommend probiotics. yes they make yoghurt with them in but I imagine not in large numbers so taking a supplement is a good idea. I am no expert and it seems you can get some really expensive ones! But I'd say that taking any is better than nothing!

Has anyone heard anything about the OMX 12 Plus? It's a Japanese probiotic, and I think it's the one I'm going to try. It seems affordable and from what I have read it seems effective as well.

The reason you don't eat most yogurts is because they may put a strain
or two in it, then advertise it saying that it 'balances your digestive system.'
One or two strains are not going to do much for people as messed up as us.
Whereas the pills have BILLIONS of strains of beneficial bacteria in them.
I take them every day.

How long do Probiotics take to start showing improvements?

My Doctor recommended I take them and I did a month worth.. but I thought they were to expensive and they didn't help THAT much.

Should I have given them more time to work?

In my experience, I usually classify probiotics with digestive enzymes,
in that I know they are helping (as probiotics keep bad bacteria at bay
and enzymes aid digestion in breaking down food for absorption)
but I do not necessarily 'feel' a difference, such as decreased pain or
anything that dramatic. There are also ones that aren't as expensive as
VSL for example. Check out your local vitamin shop.

I always feel better on antibiotics, and worse on probiotics (but not yoghurt; I tolerate plain yoghurt well) !!!!!! Has anyone noticed this?

P.S: i never tried the VSL#3 as we don't have it in my country; don't know if it's better than the ones I've tried.............

Having been an avid reader for some time I have now joined :D

Probiotics have been a nightmare for me! I had one pot of Activia and suffered severe epigastric pain (upper middle abdominal). Being another glutton for punishment, I had a second pot the next day and a third the following. One the fourth day I was Hospitalized and had a small bowel resection on the 6 day... Personally I would stay well away from those so called "friendly" bacteria!!

:welcome: smitten! Wow - that stinks! I doubt the Activia was the main culprit for your surgery - do you think? That would be scary. I have tried it and I think it is nasty personally. It is kind of slimy. I have a twin with Crohn's and she said it really upset her gut as well and stopped eating it. I was eating Yoplait's YoPlus stuff with the probiotics about every day before I cut out dairy and I *feel* like it helped me - but you know how that goes. My BMs seemed more normal on it. I guess I don't feel like it hurt me.

Glad you have joined us :O)

I have tried several types of probiotics (including many active yogurts,) none have done anything for my symptoms but, for all I know, they may have left a better class of bacteria in my gut.

I'm not lactose intolerant, so I just usually make myself a smoothie in the morning with banana, stonyfield yogurt, and some strawberries. :) I will have to try the more potent probiotics you guys mention...

A good probiotic is essential for IBDers cuz we tend to have bacterial over-growth, so flaring or not, a good probiotic should be taken daily...one that contains a minimum of 10 billion live cultures is best, anything that contains more and various strains is even better.

Yogurt naturally has the lactose broken down in it so it shouldn't cause issue for lactose intolerance (which I was severely until I started taking probiotics daily and indefinitely)...if you have lactose issues and yogurt is still an issue then it may actually be casein found in dairly products and an allergy rather than a lactose issue. You can get tested for either or both.

2 Really great probiotics are one called Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way which has guaranteed intestinal release, aids with lactose issues, high cholesterol and for women, vaginal health. Another comparable to the Primdadophilus is one called ProBioTX-11 made by Sangsters, it's a little better cuz it contains 10 billion live cultures in one cap, the PR contains 5 but it's still a good one, the ProBio is better priced cuz it's Sangsters Health Food store brand...both must be kept refridgerated.

Whether you notice a difference in your IBD symptoms or not, it's still a good idea to take a good probiotic daily, you might be surprised that it may at least keep your current symptoms from getting worse if nothing else. It also varies for each person as to how long it takes for a good probiotic to kick in.

I take Ortho Molecular Biotic - it has 20B cultured bacteria. My mom swears by it. It costs about $56 dollars for 60 capsules. I've been taking it for 30 days and if anything I know it's helping with getting the good bacteria into my gut and starving the bad bacteria. I'm a big believer in diet/food being the root cause of this disease.

Here is the link to the product for those interested:
