Hi! Since I've been in remission from Crohn's for 3 years now, and am now confident enough with my health to try and establish a constant exercise routine in order to tone my body up, I wondered if anybody had any experience with Protein shakes & any adverse effects from them?

When I say I'm in remission, I'm generally healthy but I do have the odd day where my stomach goes nuts and I'm on the toilet most of the morning. I reckon this is because Crohn's has left me with a sensitive stomach to certain things (particularly oily or greasy foods) and has adopted the 'better out than in' policy if it decides it does not like something I've eaten...but generally I'm good, feeling healthy & having regular BMs.

I don't particularly want to lose any weight, as I'm at my healthiest weight I've ever been (just under 10st, 5ft 9, 22yrs old) but exercise makes me feel so healthy & strong, and I do want to tone myself up. I have been doing research into Protein Shakes to instantly help my muscles & build them up, as my muscle ache the next day has been very sore, but I figured people's first hand experiences and advice on products would be better than commercial websites!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :dusty:

I make my own shakes. There are a variety of protein powders out there - you may just have to try a few until you find one that works for you. Personally, I have a difficult time digesting whey, so I opted for a soy-based protein/vitamin powder. My shakes consist of 5 ingredients: crushed ice, almond milk, soy protein powder, cocoa powder, and a banana. I blend it all up and have it for breakfast most mornings. It's delicious and easy on my tummy.

I use plant based protein, from a company by the name of Sunfood. Their products are all organic, gluten free, vegan, etc. I mix it with 8 oz of water after working out.I also add L-glutamine. So far I have had no reaction to it. It is very chalky because it is plant based but you kind of get used to it. The L-Glutamine is useful for recovery, but also in some studies has been found to help heal the intestines.
