Hi all!

First off I'm new to the forum so greetings to you all and I hope everyone is doing well. I've been suffering from Crohn's symptoms since October last year and was diagnosed a few months ago. I'm looking forward to sorting myself out and hopefully I can help a few others too :thumleft:

I was just wondering what people's experiences with drinking pure orange juice is. On Monday I drank at least one glass (maybe two, I'm not quite sure) for the first time in as long as I can remember. The following day I felt truly awful. I woke up during the night with agonizing stomach pains that I some how managed to sleep through and I then had to deal with them throughout the day. I was constantly back and forth to the toilet (I must of gone about 30-40 times) with yellow diarrhoea. This also resulted in me experiencing worse ring sting than Frodo Baggins (excuse my crudeness and the dodgy joke).

Basically I had a terrible flare up and I'm curious to whether anyone else has had such a bad reaction to orange juice. I hadn't consumed anything else unusual that day that I wouldn't have usually so by virtue of elimination I can't help but blame the orange.

Also does anyone have any recommendations on how to help control flare ups? Obviously this is a difficult question as everyone reacts differently to different things but after having a look around on here I've noticed generally a few of the same foods and drinks pop up.

Orange juice is quite high in sugar, and some people cannot tolerate the fruits flesh.

Im fine with a couple of glasses but do notice the next day I suffer with D if i drink anymore, red grapes and kiwis are a killer for me so had to stop eating them :(

As you said different foods flare different people, but heres a list of foods that cause the most problems (and a list of possibly safe foods) http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=17707

When I was a child I used to drink A LOT of pure orange juice, and my Mum also noticed that I had a lot of stomach bugs and vomited a lot. The doctors suggested we cut out the orange juice and the sickness improved! I haven't drank it since!

I can't drink it either - in fact citrus fruits in general. I think it's a combination of the acidity and the fibrous texture.

My general advice to control flares is to eat one food at a time, leaving at least a half hour between foods. For me, fruit juices (grape and orange with pulp) cause me the most problems when I combine them with other food groups.

As for kiwis, there are more and more studies showing they may benefit crohns (obviously not everyone) though they recommend the hard, sour, just ripe ones.

Thanks for the replies guys :thumright:

I'm definitely going to stay off the citrus fruits for a while. I love apple juice but I think I'll lay off that too just in case it decides to detonate my stomach like the orange. I still feel quite lousy but a lot better today than the two previous days. I ate a load of bananas yesterday that I feel may of helped a lot. I might just live off them from now on :D

In the flesh of the fruit are little glands, they make elemental orange oil out of that, some people can't tolerate that, they get rash and stuff. Never had any issues myself.

Drinking orange juice (500 mL/d) increases plasma concentrations of vitamin C and reduces concentrations in humans. These effects were significantly more pronounced in smokers. But its really very bad effected on you. Than i suggest you to avoid it.
I've never smoked in my life but have spent a considerable amount of time around smokers so I suppose I've inhaled a lot of second hand smoke. That could of had an effect... hmmm...

I used to love oranges and red grapefruit when they're in season, but the pulp is definitely recognisable "on the way out", and tends to cause a bit of D. So in general I avoid the whole fruit, unless it's a tiny bit in fruit salad. A small amount of juice w/o pulp seems to be ok tho..

I can't cope with orange juice, it is far too acidic for me, but apple juice is not a problem and cranberry juice is fine as well.
