A quick recap- I was in the hospital for nearly a month with complications from surgery. I went a couple of weeks with no food when I was NPO due to an abscess draining (I had liquids on and off during this time.) but after a couple of weeks I was started on TPN aka hyperale (completely daily nutrition through a picc line, for those of you who may not know.) I am still on TPN, at home, on a clear liquid diet.

Anyways, I have not had my period since probably a week before my surgery (and my surgery was May 20th.) I am just wondering if any of you ladies out there know if it is normal to miss a period after going a long period of time without eating? Also, I have lost 15-20 pounds in the past couple of months as well. (a result of being so sick before surgery, as well as going weeks without eating in the hospital.)

I was on BC for a long time up until a few months ago. My period was always irregular without BC but irregular in that I would get it twice a month. Since going off BC, my period has been pretty regular.

Help!!

Its normal to lose you period if youre underweight or sick like that. The body just doesn't have the resources to produce a menses and it halts that process. People who are bulemic or anorexic lose their periods... but runners and very lean athletes do too. I wouldn't worry too much about it... your body just can't do it right now, so it halted that process.

Thanks, that's what I figured. but even when there should be no chance of pregnancy, I ALWAYS get worried when I miss a period, or if it comes late. It's like a female instinct, lol. Also I forgot to mention, I did get some light spotting while in the hospital, but it was nowhere near enough to be a real period.

if your body is busy making your poorly bits better than it wont have enough "goodness" to go around, so will stop the periods.

Just to reiterate everything the girls have said, your body is too focused on itself, to be able to focus on another life as well until last month I hadn't had a period in a year and a half. No worries just takes time :)

Yup! Exactly!! It's like the body's way of saying...."OK, I am having a hard enough time just keeping YOU alive...can't support a "parasite" as well"... lol

And yup, depending on how depleted you got, or how stressed your body was, it can take up to two years to rebuild the stores needed to concieve another life.

However, just because you aren't menstrating, does not mean you are not ovulating, so staying on the BC (if you are going to be sexually active) is a good idea. There still is a slim chance you could get preggers... so I think we would want to avoid that until your body is ready.
:)
