Ladies- I believe I am experiencing menstrual cramps. It is about that time. Lots of different pains to categorize. Did it cause your flare-up to worsen? I have been in the bathroom most of the morning. Feel nauseous and it's not helping the diarrhea situation any. New Dr took me off Asacol HD. Was making me worse. On Budesonide. Anyone on it?

Hi, yes, I'm on Budesonide and it has been helping, I think I'm getting back into remission. How long have you been on it? And oh yes, "that time of the month" always seems to be worse guts-wise, with more cramping, diarrhea, urgency, etc. Fortunately it usually just lasts a few days for me and then things go back to normal (well, normal for me anyway). So hopefully this is just a menstrual thing and not a flare-up, and I hope you feel better in a few days. Hopefully the Budesonide works as well - it can take a little while sometimes as it's not as strong nor systemic as something like prednisone, so give it time. Hang in there!

I am not on Budesonide. But, I do flare a bit during that time of the month as well. Hope things start settling down a bit soon for you. Just know that you're not alone.

I have been on Budesonide for 6 days. Some symptoms are easing up. Thanks for your insight. Lots of urgency in the a.m. versus the rest of the day. Thanks for your support.

Budesonide usually takes a few weeks to fully kick in, but that's good that you're noticing some symptom relief so quickly and I hope things continue to improve. I presume you're starting out on 9 mg of budesonide?

My symptoms are typically worst in the mornings, too (nausea & bathroom trips) - I'm not quite sure why that is. I find that not eating anything for the first couple hours after I wake up seems to help. I just sip on a bit of water in the early mornings and that's it, and when I get to work I then feel okay enough to eat a little something and/or drink some tea. Also, I find that eating a small dinner also helps as then there's not as much to "get rid of" the next morning and my guts generally seem less angry. If I eat a big dinner, I'll usually have a rough night and morning.

Budesonide helped with my symptoms after a couple of weeks. It gave me horrible migraines, though. That time of the month always makes my GI symptoms worse, too. (Side note: for some reason, my iPad autocorrected budesonide to nude sounds.)

I am taking 3 mg. Three capsules in a.m. I usually don't eat as soon as I get up. Maybe an hour passes. Are you eating what you like or are you on a regimented diet?

That's the max dose, 3x 3mg pills (9 mg total) so that should hopefully do a lot of good for you. I also get migraines from Budesonide, although my understanding is that this is a fairly uncommon side effect.

As for diet, I basically just eat what doesn't hurt! :p Not very scientific and it took a lot of trial & error to figure out what is "safe" for me and what isn't. You may want to try an elimination diet and/or keep a food journal (track what you eat, what symptoms you have, how many bowel movements, etc). That can help you figure out what your trigger foods are, if you have any. If you're wondering specifically what my breakfast is, it's usually a smoothie that I make with ice, almond milk, protein/supplement powder, and a banana - I blend it all up and sip it slowly. Having a semi-liquid breakfast like that usually sits well in my stomach and doesn't cause me trouble (I drink it slowly though because sometimes the cold temperature of the smoothie can cause cramping).
