Hi All; about 3 weeks ago my son seemed to spontaneously develop a rash under his nose. It is red and blotchy and occasionally has a tiny white bump or two. I did some googling and think it may be peri oral dermatitis, but I really don't know for sure. We haven't used any different lotions, foods, etc, to bring it on, so I'm at a loss as to how he got it. I was treating it at home with OTC anti fungal creams, antibiotic creams, and also tea tree oil. Some days it looked like it was clearing up, only to look worse later. This morning I noticed a red blotch closer to his mouth, so it appears to be spreading. I am going to make a dr appt, but in the meantime, am wondering if anyone else has encountered anything like this. Thanks!

Has his zinc levels been checked? H had rashes early on near side of his nose and mouth. We also treated with anti fungal and it would ebb and flow. He tested low for zinc and dr had us supplement. His rashes cleared. Could be coincidence? But worth a check? Low zinc can be associated w skin issues.
Good luck

I have that... don't have IBD. So far D hasn't gotten it. Treated by a dermatologist, pretty easy to manage once they give you ointment

Thank you for your thoughts. I was able to get an appt today with the GP. My suspicions were right (thank you, internet!), and it is perioral dermatitis. We got a prescription for a cortisone-anti fungal combo ointment. If that doesn't clear it in a couple weeks, they may do a round of oral antibiotics.
I hadn't thought about the zinc! It was checked last fall and was a bit low, but the GI just recommended a supplement. I'm assuming it's ok now, but I know it's a dangerous thing to assume...

For DS his perioral dermatitis was drug induced ( remicade).
Once we stopped remicade no more rash .

Hmmm, a drug side effect did cross my mind, but I hope it's not the case. The MTX seems to working well otherwise. He has been on it since last summer and this rash is new, so fingers-crossed, it's not the med.

DS had skin reaction to remicade following the first dose .
So it wasn't a surprise when it got worse ( skin peeled on fingers and feet ).

Hope the creams work

Josh gets a very similar rash on his face. To start with it was thought to be impetigo [sp] and was treated with anti fungal cream which did no good.
It turns out his zinc levels are low, so he now takes a zinc supplement which has helped.

Sounds like the rash my son had, at sides of nose and his mouth. His also appeared under one of his eyes. I found it gotworse when ointment was applied so we just used plain old water to cleanse and it's disappeared, still don't know what caused it. Xx

Well, we've been using a prescription cream for about a week now, and there's been no change. Perhaps it has stopped the rash from spreading, but it's not getting rid of what is already there. Dr said to allow the cream 2 wks to work, but I'm not optimistic. Just one of those things, I guess! Maybe I'll just do nothing after the 2 wks is up and see what happens...

My son's nasty-looking rash under his nose FINALLY disappeared. Up until a couple weeks ago, we had still been using the prescription cream-with no change. My son went to camp for a week and didn't take his prescription cream (I knew the cap would never come off the container). He played in the mud pit, swam in the lake, and didn't shower, and ta-da! the rash is gone!
