Hello,

I am new to this forum. I am 46 year old male.
I have had anal pain issues for as long as I can remember. Mainly moderate pain and itching. I have had been diagnosed with Piles about 20 years ago for which I had injection and then rubberband therapy.

For the last two years, I was having blood in stools that increased in frequency recently. I got referred to a GI specialist who recommended colonoscopy.

After colonoscopy, I was told there was no visual inflammation, removed two small polyps, had 2nd degree internal piles and also a rectal fistula. I have yet to get results from the biopsy.

I am extremely concerned about the rectal fistula. I don't have any external opening on the skin anywhere nor do I have any discharge from anywhere. So where could this fistula be going into ? Also not sure if a rectal fistula is the same as an anal fistula (as that's what seems to be more common when I do a search for it)

I have to see the doctor back in 2 weeks once the biopsy results are out but am very concerned I may have Crohn's and some kind of an unusual rectal fistula that will change my life for the foreseeable future.

I don't have diarrheah or fever or weight loss.

thanks
Aj

There's a good chance the blood in your stool was simply from the polyps, however it could just be from the fistula. If the fistula isn't connected to the surface of your skin, then it's most likely connected to somewhere else in your intestinal tract or other tissue in your body. That's something they're going to have to determine, probably with a ct scan or such-like.

Crohn's is typically heavily dependent on inflammation being present, it doesn't sound like you're exhibiting symptoms otherwise (please keep in mind that I am no way a doctor, nor should any of this information be considered as prognosis).

I hope the biopsy comes back all clear for you, and that you feel well soon!

Peace of mind.

Wanted to give you all an update. My doctor called me and told me that the biopsy of the rectal region points to Gastric heterotopia of rectum. He said there are only 40 known cases documented in medical literature where a Gastric heterotopia occurs in the rectal area (in this case there are stomach tissues seen in the rectum). He also told me that there are only two cases reported in medical literature where a fistula has occurred due to this.

He is not yet sure what the next steps are but has asked me to set up an appointment for addional follow up.

Considering how rare this condition seems to be, I am not sure if anyone on this forum has heard about this condition. But if you have, please let me know.

thanks,
