remicade reaction

They arnt kidding when they say the reaction some people get to remicade is very serious.I was getting my treatment on friday, the nurse had just upped my dose and walked out when I felt exhausted. My blood pressure dropped, pulse jumped and it was hard for me to breath. It felt like someone was sitting on my lungs. All I could do was take tiny gasps that didnt help at all.I started freaking out of course and finally got my mom to get the nurse(she thought I was faking 'til she saw my color changing).I was getting dizzy and was about to pass out when the nurse gave me benadryll and stopped the remicade.I immediately started breathing again but started violently gagging.I swore I was gonna die.I wish they had explained to me exactly how serious it could get.I was not prepared for that.Has anyone else had a similar reaction?

Remicade Reaction

Back in July my daughter was getting her third infusion, when she said "i can't breath and there's a lump moving in my stomach" i got the nurse, she flushed the meds from her veins and called the doctor, who came right away he had a C-scan done which showed nothing, she was taken off remicade and two weeks later she started taking humira 80mg first dose 40mg weekly thereafter, she's had no problems since, only thing remicade is suppose to work faster with healing the fistula site, so she'll have to wait longer for her reversal, we plan to ask next appt. if she can return to the remicade..Sam

Thats very odd, and odds are wont happen again. All that has to happen is lower the infusion rate...you could've stayed at the previous rate obviously and had no problem. Im sure they told you about respiratory problems, if not, its in the med potentials you should have read.

Gosh, hope these side effects are rare as I am due to start Remicade and havent had it before. Didnt really want to have it but I need it for my fistulas to heal also.

The side affects are very rare, about as rare as having an aspirin cause you a heartache. Calm down everyone.

I had the EXACT same reaction to the Remicade after my third infusion (VERY SCARY!!!), so I tried some different drugs for a few years and finally decided to take the remicade again...in another 6ish treatments I had the reaction 3 times...even though I was taking benadryl beforehand and extending the infusion to 8 hours. I started the Humira (same dose as stated from someone else) and I have had no reactions and virtually zero symptoms...not to mention it is much more convenient to get a 30 second shot every 2 weeks than an 8 hour infusion every 6-8 weeks :p

Like 12 days after my first remicade infusion I had about 4 or 5 hot flashes. Is that normal? Has anyone else had something like that happen to them? I could feel the heat start a my toes and work its way up my body. Then just as fast as it started it felt like someone turned the ac up really high and I was cold again. I told the nurse when I went for my second infusion and she didnt say much.

Anytime something foreign enters your body, especially intraveinously, it will do something to you. However, I wouldn't worry too much about the Remicade reactions. I'm not downplaying the original posters reactions... I'm sure they were scary! The docs or nurses should be right there though, should anything happen. At my infusion center, there are always two nurses less than ten feet away from the patients at any given time. Just had my 4th infusion, at double dosage, which means double the infusion rate per milligram and no reaction whatsoever. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that the remicade is actually working for me at this point, but I would hate to scare anyone away from taking it. All of the other Crohn's patients tell me it is their miracle drug! So, obviously, if you are receiving an infusion and something strange happens, alert the staff immediately. You should have benadryl at home too, just in case you have a delayed reaction.

I wasn't trying to scare anyone either.REmicade is working well for me but I wamted people to know that if they have a reaction it can be very scary.

Amanda your reaction was most likely from stopping and starting again the second time....not the drug. But sounds like you people would be perfect for the Humira trial going on right now...for remicade failures.

Carolinajak you should look at my thread on remicade and humira benefits outweighing the risks...
