So my GI looked at my barium x ray results and has concluded that despite it looking fine by colonoscopy, MRI and Pill cam... I actually have a strictures in terminal ileum. The plan now is to see surgeon next week and surgery next week or week after. They will resect TI and have a look in other suspected strictures area (Jejunum) to see if anything needs to be stretched/removed there.

I.Am.SO.Scared .

Few questions, what is the chance of me needing a stoma / bag (so sorry i don't know the correct term); what will recovery be like and just general nice stories about how well others did would be nice lol.

It depends on how much needs to be resected and where it is and the style of the surgeon. Some surgeons like to use a temporary bag to promote healing. Often doctors can perform a strictureplasty which preserves the bowel. If the surgeon says you are eligible for this procedure you likely will not need a bag. Definitely take your time to discuss all of your questions and concerns and don't hesitate to get a second opinion as well.

Most of the time they only give a stoma (ilyostomy) to eople when their colon needs a rest. I have had resections in the past and also a temp. ilyostomy bag.

You will be fine. Most people have minor complacations, with that said you should have a recovery time of around 4-8 weeks. That sounds like a long time but I'm talkng about getting to about 95% of normal. You'll do just fine, keep your head up and stay positive, that will help with the recovery.

I've just had it done 7 weeks ago, I asked the same question about the stoma and my surgeon said that they do everything they can to preserve as much bowel as possible but if there are any complications then I would have a stoma. Luckily it all went ok. I was in some pain after but that was quickly sorted out by the nurses. If you are worried about pain then ask for an epidural, I had one on my last surgery and it was great I didn't feel any pain at all. I was in the high dependency unit for 5 days this is mainly because they could give one to one nursing. After a couple of days in bed I was sitting in a chair, this is a must to keep your lungs clear of infection and when they were happy that the wound wasn't infected and everything was working ok on the inside I was transferred to a ward. I spend 4 days there getting off IV pain relief and once I was eating a little and my bowels were working ok I went home. Just remember to take it really easy at home for the first 2 weeks, even walking a short distance is not advisable. I got my staples out (28) after 2 days at home and 7 weeks later I can't wait to get back to work. You will be fine Sophie I was really worried before as well but the doctors and nurses in the NHS are great whatever you hear else where. Just take your recovery one day at a time and enjoy the time at home. And eat sensibly

Thanks everyone for advice
Ooh Chally2 i hope it goes well just all become a bit real and an epidural scares me too lol not too good with needles ha. Also i had a bad experience of my hospital when i was admitted last year but that was just in a holding ward so think i need to get over it.

They're meant to contact me this week to go in to see them then surgs this week or next we will see. Just praying it all goes smoothly

Thanks again everyone xx

Sorry Chally22 forgot to write how are your crohns symptoms now then, do you feel better and are you happy you had the surgery?? Hope you are doing well

Yes my symptoms are 100% better now I'm eating normally and everything else is back to normal as well. 😳😳 Before surgery I had quite a bit of pain when eating, that's gone now.

Hi, I pray everything will go well for you. I have had 2 resections but no stoma. I have had a CT, colonoscopy, and pill cam. The pill cam showed narrowing. I am in a lot of pain, diarrhea, wt loss. Did your sed rate or CRP remain high or was it normal too. These IBD markers are low for me now so my GI says I am in remission. I truly believe it is my crohns or strictures causing my problems. I was just wondering what your symptoms are like? Thanks.

hi jbpharmd my symptoms were really urgent diarrhea, bloating, sickness, nausea. They ended up doing an ileocecal resection. My CPR & ESR were NORMAL. keep pushing for answers. Good luck
