Hi guys... I wasn't sure where to post this.

When my current-but-soon-to-be-former GI was insistent that I had IBD, I began having terrible sacroiliac joint pain. He said that it was caused by the CD/UC.

This week, I've been having an awful flare.

Do any of you have this? How do you treat it? Kinda miserable over here.... don't want to complain to Josh, since he's so sick :(

Awful, isn't it?

Right now, just using Tylenol for Arthritis right now as per my GP. That, Physiotherapy and Yoga. We've discussed biologics such as Humira or Enbrel, but I guess that remains a last option.

I am awaiting an appointment with a Rheumatologist.

Back pain! UGH.
Stretching and strengthening help with rehabilitation.
Rotate the use of moist heat and ice packs.
Topical Analgesics for Pain Relief‎.
Lidoderm Patches for Pain Relief.
If you can take them, a good NSAID like Celebrex or Meloxicam can help.
Sleeping on your left side with a pillow between your knees can help.

Then we get into the spinal Cortisone injections, more potent pain killers, and stringent physical therapy.

Is the pain running down both legs or just one? If one, is the the right leg?

Sorry to hear about this Ris!!!!!! I have stiffness but not pain so don't know what it feels like. Hope it gets better soon, and sorry to hear Josh isn't doing so good!!!!

How Ris honey I hope you can get it sorted soon.. its horrible to be in so much pain. I seem to be having issues again with my joints.. I had found a medication that worked for me but was a NSAID so my GI wanted to see if I could do without it which Im struggling with at the moment. I have found with my back pain that yoga and stretching is def helping and notice if I miss a week. Good luck darl.

I don't suffer joint pain and I
sorry too hear that u hav too go thru it aswell as ya cd

I get bad back pains especially if I been standing all day or doin heavy labour work
the only way I get relief is I take 4-5 panadole every few hrs run a hot bath with either radox or Epsom salts in it too help relieve some ache then lay on me bed

I spent the past two days laying carpet and moulding. I ached for two days afterward. It sucks. I tried Tylenol Arthritis, but my stomach couldn't handle it.
Did you know Tylenol is derived from coal tar? Nice.

I believe your thread title provides a clue as to the best analgesic, natural and God-given, Praise Allah!

Dude - Roger are you muslim??

Ris - you should go see a Rheumy. Have they absolutely 100% ruled out that you do not have any form of IBD whatsoever? I'd go see a rheumy and have them run their bunch of blood tests and see what you get. You are too young to have that stuff going on!! Hope you feel better - and give Josh a hug, I'm sorry to hear he is still feeling crappy!!

I have had really bad lower back pain on and off since I was first diagnosed and it aches down my legs. It seems to go hand in hand with a flare and I wonder if the inflamation doesn't push on some nerves and stuff that cause the pain?

I tried the extra strength rapid release Tylenol, but nada. Not sure they would do anything anyways.....

I had talked to my GI/PCP about physio months and months ago. He said that before I could do that, the stomach thing needed to be taken care of. What do they have you do during physio?

I was on Humira for a little while. Didn't notice a difference. What is Enbrel?

YOU know all too well about back pain, my friend :(

No matter how I try to stretch it, I can't seem to get to that spot. I try to massage it as well, but it's difficult to get to that exact area.

I have some of those small Thermacare heating pads.... I think I'll try one of them. I tried to find a big enough ice pack because the pain is in my right lower back and around to the groin area (IDKY, but I hate the word groin).

I'm kinda wussy about bone shots... lol

Ugh back pain is back pain - it sucks, no matter what kind it is, doesn't it?

Is Panadole an NSAID or a narc?

I would try a bath, but I have no patience. I sit there and think about all the things I COULD be doing lol

No, they haven't ruled anything out yet, because I haven't been to see my "doctor" since I told HIM I needed a HIDA scan!!! I'm switching doctors, but now, after so many years of this crap and so many doctors who didn't believe me and passed me off to the next, I'm weary about trusting anyone.

No, I haven't tried acupuncture - can you feel the needles?

What is a TENS machine?

A TENS machine is electo-stimulation to your spine.
I use acupressure, not acupuncture. You would benefit from that I think.
Also you should get some physical therapy and let them give you deep tissue massages.

Check your PM's as well. I have more info.

Hiya Ris
TENS machine is Trancutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator and is excellent for back pain, childbirth, any pain really. They cost about £15 and can be bought from the chemist. I use it on my lower back and neck.
I love acupuncture and no you cant feel the needles, but it works! don't know how?
When I have a flare, an old neck injury that I got off a student in school also flares up, the docs call it spondylitis, and I go to occy health for acupuncture.
hope you find some relief soon
xx

Not really sure what kind of back pain you're talking about. I have an exercise that works really well for lower back pain if that's it.

Wow - I looked them up on Amazon, thinking they were going to be $$$, but they're really not. I think I'm going to give that a try. Thanks, hun!

I want phys therapy/physio.... good thing my insurance covers it!

Deep tissue massage sounds kinda painful. The only reason I say that is because although this is a tough area to "get to," one time I did reach it and tried to massage it. As soon as I hit it, my leg buckled and I started dry-heaving.

Now THAT might be fun lol

The pain is right lower back and wraps all the way around to the front/groin area, and is a little bit in the, um, butt cheek as well lol

Thanks... is this the area?

(Hopefully no one will get offended by this cartoon drawing of a butt. If anyone does, please let me know and I'll remove it!)

you're welcome Ris!
never heard of sacroiliac pain before, is it like sciatica where you get shooting pains down your legs and it bloody batters?
That's a fit arse on that drawing innit?

I have heard of it before Ris and it is common in people who have crohns.. they say that physio and massaging can help to relieve the symptoms.

Astra - glad to hear acupuncture works for you I have always wanted to try it out but haven't known anyone that had tried it so might give it a go now. I get really bad back & neck pain along with tension headaches. I have always had a crap upper back area but now my lower back has joined in since being diagnosed with crohns.. fun..fun.

I can vouch for accupuncture
after my car accident my back was so sore the dr couldn't even lay his hand on it let alone prod it etc
so they tried accupuncture
yea some needles sting but if they do they remove straight away n move to nother area too relieve the pain
after six needles/pins in the back I fell asleep on the table lmao
i ended up with 15 in total so yea guess ya mustn't feel em if I fell asleep lol

After doing some research and just looking at your picture Santos - that is exactly where mine is - It is chronic and goes all the way down my leg and up into my neck - this last week has been really bad and the pain is unrelenting giving me a major headache as well - with this and the Crohn's I can feel that long scary arm of depression trying to gain its grip - I got so desperate the other night I took one of my husband's oxycodin pills - he doesn't take them - too afraid but it made me sick to my stomach - back to the doctors I go - damn it!

You sound like you're going through hell :(

Do you usually take anything for it?

My physiotherapist administers a TENS machine on me. It's pretty good. I should look into getting one myself.

Hmmm... mine is more muscular I think. This cute drawing says it's a joint, so it may not help at all.
I'll tell you what I do anyways.
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Put your fists fingers down and under your butt cheeks. Lift your legs off the ground just a little bit so you feel some pressure. This strengthens my back muscles quickly, and I rarely have problems anymore.
Then again - I am not a doctor, so no one try this please, thanks.

Various studies have shown the incidence of sacroiliitis in Crohn's sufferers to be anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. Even at the lower number, that's a significant amount.

Ris, I'll try to get you the pdfs of my physiotherapist's exercise plan. I'm not on my home computer right now.

yeah acupuncture is boss, try it and see,
my physio wires all the needles up together (they have little holes in em, like a sewing needle) and you can have a little machine that you can control yourself, to higher the vibration or reduce it!
It's so relaxing, I always conk out!

Oh and Tan
I suffer summit terrible with tension headaches too, they are referred pain from my neck, apparantly.
So my physio sticks needles in my fod too, ace!
Have you tried 4head, you rub it on your temples, it's really good

The deep tissue massage hurts while it's being administered, however the after-results are well worth it.

My new physiotherapist recommended I get my own TENS unit. She says that way, I can do it at home and the time I spend with her put to other uses. So I just bought one online.

I've changed Physiotherapists. The last guy was okay, I guess, but the practice was more geared towards athletic injury rehabilitation. The lady I now see specializes in arthritic issues.
