salicylates and Crohn's

Hi all,

Has anyone tried a low salicylate diet for their Crohn's?

I became aspirin intolerant about ten years before my Crohn's diagnosis but my first 'proper' flare followed taking of (just one) aspirin. Might have been coincidence but I know aspirin contains a lot of salicylate and that this is a known allergen and gut irritant, even in tiny doses for some people. It's also present in high amounts in some foods. I can't tolerate white wine now for example, which I know is high in salicylates too.

Has anyone tried cutting out foods high in salicylates and did it make any difference?

Interesting!
funny how honey is very high, but about the only sweet stuff you CAN eat on a SCD?
and almonds? but you can eat almond butter on SCD?

AND! what about Pentasa?

I'm trying SCD now & as Joan saws, honey is about the only sweet I'm allowed. I'm using a ton of it. I can't say I've noticed that it has worsened my symptoms. In addition to all the salicylate 5 ASA's like Pentasa, Pepto Bismal is a salicylate. My 1st GI suggest very high doses of this for me initially. Didnt help, but I don't recall it making things any worse, other than the ringing in my ears (classic salicylism indicator).

I am still not official diagnosed with IBD, so perhaps "my mileage is varying".

So many conflicting theories. A clear indication of how little is known, unfortunately. :(

I have also been told I am allergic to aspirin, after I reacted badly to a salicylate dressing on my foot yrs ago.

I tried the low salicylate for about 3 months, but t.b.h. I found it very hard because salicylates are in so many different things, expecially vegetables and fruits. I felt I was not getting a balanced diet, and after 3 mths did not feel the diet was helping me, but this may have been because I was not completely strict with it.

I then switched to the low histamine diet and found that far more helpful in comparison.

Thanks Minx. Yup I know what you mean - it's in loads of stuff. I just have such an extreme reaction to aspirin I thought it might be worth pursuing. Even a incy wincy glass of white wine makes my belly ache :ymad:
