Usually it's a case of: "I must see that...I must see that...I must see that...darn, it's gone" so I'm determined this year to actually see some films, rather than just talk about it.

So far I've seen: Quartet which I enjoyed - great actors, lovely music (which is played by real musicians from some of the world's top orchestras), although it doesn't have any 'deep and meaningful' message

Life of Pi which has amazing effects and is, I think, as true to the original story as it is possible to be. I saw it in 2D and, even then, ducked when the tiger jumped over Pi from behind! You just have to keep remembering that no animal was actually harmed in the making of this film

Les Miserables, which I didn't enjoy quite as much as the stage version. But it is my favourite musical of all time! Interesting to see Russell Crowe as Javert and Hugh Jackman was very good .

Next on my To See List are Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln.

What about you?

Over the weekend I watched Identity Thief which is absolutely hilarious and also Flight which had a really good story to it.

We went to see Life of Pi in 3D, and it was beautifully rendered, but it left out practically everything that made the book so amazing. I went with a group of friends who hadn't read the book, and had to spend several hours afterwards explaining it because they didn't pick up any of it from the movie.

Hoping to see Les Miserables soon.

Just seen Ben Affleck's ARGO, very good film really enjoyed it.

A film I watched last week was called "Angels Share". Scottish film about whiskey, it was very funny. Language is a bit strong at times but had a good story line mixed with some funny lines. Well worth a watch.

I finally saw Bridesmaids this weekend. I say finally because I really wasn't expecting it to be much more than a cheesy chick flick and so put off seeing it. However, I laughed A LOT! Still a chick flick, but really funny.

LOVED Silver Linings Playbook! That was my favorite movie for last year. Lincoln was long but well done. Argo was good. I've been unsure about seeing Life of Pi... I'm a huge animal lover and super sensitive about animals being hurt, even in a movie so I'm afraid to see this one based on what I heard.

2thFairy - I LOVED Bridesmaid too - sooooooo funny, very well done!!! If you're feeling down or blue and need a good laugh, rent Bridesmaids!

In the last few weeks I have watched:

Cloud Atlas (at the cinema): was looking forward to this for a long time although I've never read the book. I know it's been receiving mixed reviews, but I wasn't disappointed - really enjoyed it!

28 Days Later: doubt I need to say much on this as it's over ten years old, but for some reason I'd never watched it until now. Brilliant.

Snowtown: Not necessarily a film I'd recommend to a lot of people, but I found it to be really good. It's based on a real-life serial killer, and the film has a constant unsettling and foreboding atmosphere. I need to give a mention to the score too, as I love ambient soundtracks.

Brick: Really enjoyable and unique, tells a noir-ish detective story in a high school setting. I picked this one up because I'm becoming quite a Joseph-Gordon Levitt fan, and it was directed by Rian Johnson, who more recently directed Looper.

I second Argo being a great film. Bridesmaids surprised me too; like others I was expecting a standard chick flick and wasn't thrilled at all about it, but it was actually really funny. I've still to see The Angels Share, despite hailing from Scotland. :shifty-t:

I saw Les Miserables last week and was disapointed. I love LOVE the music.. but the way the movie was made I did not like. But was interesting to see Russel sing. :D

I wanted to see Life of Pi but missed it.

Next I plan to see Oz the Great and Powerful in a couple weeks. Got a discount ticket to the movies so might aswell spend it on something. :)

Just reviving this thread.

Anyone seen "Sunshine on Leith"? If so, what did you think of it? It's coming to my local movie theatre soon.

I haven't seen but a lot of my friends have and strongly recommend it. If you do go let us know.

Watched The City Dark yesterday. A pleasantly quiet, melancholic documentary on the effects of light pollution on how we perceive night and darkness, with special attention to the loss of the starry night sky on the human psyche. It's not particularly heavy on science but I enjoyed the tone and emotional content. It's on Netflix if you have that.

Haven't seen a movie in the theater since 2005.

Very few new movies in the last fifteen years have interested me. They are mostly formulaic reruns, sequels, prequels, adaptations of TV shows and comics, heavy in CGI, very little original story material and little entertainment value.

Rewatched Fargo yesterday, what an awesome film about awful people. Coen Brother films are among the ones I come back to most, just behind Akira Kurosawa's older works or spaghetti westerns.

I took my grandson Saturday to see How to train your Dragon 2 . I thought it was good , but my grandson laugh out loud through most of the movie . So I give it two thumbs up .

Coen brothers movies are one of the few interesting movies out there. Loved O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski was quirky at first but grows on you.

A lot of my DVDs are older movies. A few weeks ago I enjoyed The Quiet Man, what a good movie.

My all time favorite Coen Brother's movie is Raising Arizona. Just absolutely hilarious!

I just watched Fargo the series and I liked it, too. But neither are true stories like it says in the beginning. Pure fiction.

I finally saw The Hunger Games and thought it was good for what it was. Hated World War Z.

If you can handle subtitles, the Norwegian film 'Headhunters' is brilliant.

To sweeten the deal, a main character is played by the actor of Jaime Lannister.

I took my 10 year old son to see Guardians of the Galaxy. Now it appears instead of my son, I have Groot, as he keeps saying "I am Groot".

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - again.
My favourite scene is when he's skateboarding in Iceland... stunning scenery. That scene captures freedom and living in the moment.

Not a movie, but I recently stumbled upon The Knick... amazing TV show, yes, some things are cliche, but the music and set design really are top notch and Steven Soderbergh really tries to focus on the little things and hints. Highly recommended.

Had a movie binge last Sunday - Whiplash (a first-year music student, Miles Teller, wins a seat behind the drums in a jazz band led by a teacher, J.K. Simmons, who uses fear and intimidation to push his students to perfection), which was excellent, in the morning.

Then Pride (realizing that they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, London-based gays and lesbians lend their support to striking coal miners in 1984 Wales), which was fun, with a serious message, in the afternoon. Pride, although very good, was a bit long and could have had 20-30 minutes edited out of it.

Yesterday went to see The Hunger Games, Mockingjay part 1.

Tell you about it next week as I was seven days too early.

Hunger Games Mockingjay - part 1. Excellent.

I saw it yesterday, too. It was a very good adaptation of the book, just like the other two movies. I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman looked horrible in the movie. I don't know if it was because he was digitally inserted into some scenes or if it was because he was strung out on drugs. Other than him, I thought the other characters/actors were really good.

Last good film I saw was Frozen . I know that's very unoriginal and it's everyone's favourite film at the moment, but I like it.

Elysium was alright - made me think about health though... dammit.

Finally saw pacific rim a week ago, it was interesting idea but just turned into safe hwood movie rather than a decent well written story sadly...

next on my list Godzilla soon (hopefully not from a hospital bed)

Nope, but I saw a bad one! The Lazarus Effect - still, enjoyable enough for a horror movie.
Right before it starter though was an ad for Avengers: Age of Ultron and there are no words for how excited I am

The Culture High. Best movie I've ever seen about the politics and money behind the criminalization of marijuana. Highly recommended.

Caught a couple of good documentaries lately-A good job stories of the FDNY and I'll be me about Glen Campbell 's final tour as he battles Alzheimer's

A very quirky new Australian film called The Dressmaker. As one reviewer said: "there’s a wickedly deranged streak running through this film, but it’s also a deeply humane piece of storytelling."

I loved it. :thumleft:

There us s movie coming out in Easter called Miracles from Heaven based on a true story. A young girl with a rare digestive disorder falls from a tree and is cured. I would love to see it.
