My son (15) has CD and is on total TPN, pred., remicade developed a rash. His GI was unable so we went to emergency room and diapnosed with shingles. They put him on IV Acyclovir for 7 days. I have been reasearcing the web and found that shingles is a reaction to several meds such as remicade. Has anyone else experienced this? I am a little nervous about this since he has his next remicade dose this coming week. He had his last dose 1 month ago. I am starting to feel like this is not working and that the inevitable of surgery is coming.:(

Hi Monica,

I have not been on Remicade, but I know Crohn's Disease can manifest itself on the skin. If you have read that Shingles is a possible symptom of Remicade than I would not be too worried.

I understand all of your fears, especially about surgery. But I can tell you that having surgery is not something that is just a bad thing. I had mine about one year ago and am doing better now than I have been for the past 4-5 years (even though was only diagnosed about 2 years ago). Surgery worked wonderfully for me. I had to miss about a semester of school and delay all of my exams, but I made it all up in the summer and am no worse for it now. No one would know what I was going through a year ago, and to the world I am a normal and happy university student (which I pretty much am).

So do think of surgery as something you need to dread. If it will be helpful for your son, then look to it as something positive. Obviously the first choice should always be to avoid surgery. But if that is what will need to happen, embrace it.

shingles is a fairly rare side effect from these drugs but it has been reported. most likely the reason is because the body's immune system is suppressed allowing the virus to reactivate in the body when it is normally suppressed by the immune system. most everyone lives with the shingles virus in their body.. it just lies dormant because the immune system keeps it at bay.

have you thought of trying natural remedies? i would at least give them a thought before taking the route of surgery. ask your doctor or nutrionist about this as it could help. it helped me substantially. if you have questions feel free to message me.
