My 17 yr old daughter was just diagnosed with Crohn's. She's taking Pentasa and Prednisone. The last few days shes had a bloated/destended belly that seems to happen mainly at nigjt and is a bit painful even to the touch. This morning she vomited and her stomach hurts her. She has a cramping feeling. Could this be a blockage, should I be worried? I couldnt get in touch with her Dr yet. Next appt isnt for two weeks. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks

How long has she been taking the medication for?
When I was first diagnosed I was almost 17. The first day I took the medication I was sick, I think I can be a lot for the body to handle, it gets shocked at so much medication suddenly in the system, and it can be hard at first to get the doses right.
I think its best you do try and contact a doctor though incase it is anything more serious.
Good luck!

Hi Lexi, If her belly feels very hard or very firm without any gurgling or bowel noise @ all that could be a sign of obstruction. A nice soft belly is a good sign generally. Definitely worth mentioning now & not leaving it for another 2 weeks IMHO.

Lexi, one of the first indications that I was blocked was vomiting.
My gastro told me to never ignore vomiting, a sure sign something's not right.
It could be the meds, but better to be safe than sorry.
I would take her to A & E to get it checked.
Let us know how you get on

Without sounding like a parrot here, I agree with the others. Vomiting is always a bad sign, and combined with the hard abdo it sounds like 2 weeks is far too long to wait. Better to be safe than sorry..
I remember when I first began taking pentasa with pred - It made me feel very bloated, and my insides could gargle for 30-40 seconds at a time - it was bonkers! I didn't have any nausea though. Not sure if this will help or not but hey! Good luck :)

thank you all for your help. i called her dr and he had us meet him right away. he wants to try her on another medication, an I.V. med, Remicade. Has anyone every been on this? Hopefully this will help. The Dr is trying this before a resection is needed. thanks again for all of your help. We are trying to learn all we can right now. its been just 4 weeks since an actual diagnoses was made. Scary
