I am so sick of taking 6MP because it is an immune suppressor and I need to travel for work daily I feel like I easily catch everyone's colds, bronchitis, etc.

Is there any Crohn's medication that I can take that does not suppress the immune system? This disease is so complicated, I want to eat healthy foods but if I do my immune system will attack me. How odd.

The only drugs that I can think of that don't suppress the immune system are the mesalazine family (Pentasa, Asacol, Lialda etc). And sulphalazine. But these are mild, more for maintaining remission than getting there in the first place. Have you tried these before?

My doctor told me the biggest thing to keep in mind is my OWN hygeine - keep hand sanitizer on hand, USE IT - don't touch mouth/nose.....

I am exposed to the general public daily (as in thousands of people!) - and haven't had illness impact me too much.....

I haven't had a cold or anything since I started on immune suppressants a few years ago. I am more careful about hygeine... for example, I don't touch my hand to my face when I've been out and about touching things like door handles and handrails. I wash my hands a lot and use hand sanitizer... and I try not to get too paranoid about it!

Most of the drugs we take do suppress the immune system, which is what helps us stop flaring-the immune systems is suppressed by the drug and therefore stops attacking (insert problem area here).

I know it's scary to think of suppressing something as important as the immune system, but I know in my case I think it just makes mine behave more normally. I get sick more often and with odd things when I don't take the immunosuppresants.

I've been on Methotrexate for almost two years and Remi for 8 months, and pred for almost 10 years more often than not. I totally agree with paso-it's your own hygeine that counts the most-hand washing, sanitizer, bathing every day, don't touch your nose or mouth etc. the usual stuff.

When I was still working I Lysol-wiped my desk every morning, wiped off the phone every time I used it after someone else had used it, Lysol sprayed my keyboard every day, and asked people nicely who used my stuff to do the same. I know I sound like a nut, but it kept me healthy. This might sound evil, but I found that if you tell people you don't want them to catch anything from you, they are more motivated to be careful lol.

By the way, what do you take apple cider vinegar for and how's it working for you? I've heard good things and have thought about trying it.

You mentioned the phone, Jeanette. I'd forgotten about that... I had my own phone at work and wouldn't let anyone else touch it. I don't work now... so that's solved that problem.

Have you tried diet?? We really are what we eat. We cant expect our bodies to perform at their best if we keep putting crap food in our mouths. I bet if you put diesel fuel in an engine designed to run on petrol it wont even start, let alone run at its best. That is what we are doing if we don't eat what our bodies are designed to run on.
Proper food will enhance your immune system, wont give you headaches, wont destroy your bones or put you at risk of all the other side effects drug companies expect us to accept for some temporary symptom relief. Lets face it the drug companies have NO cure and we need to take responsibility for our own health. Enough of my rants, take the drugs the doctors want you to take but seek out alternative treatment(diet), you will not be disappointed.

What healthy foods are you eating that makes your immune system attack you???

If I understand right, nogutsnoglory is referring to eating more fruits and veggies-great for most people, a whole lotta trouble with Crohn's.

If I eat the recommended amount of vegetables/fruit, I would end up in the hospital. The skin on the fruit/veggies as well as the seeds lodge into pitted scarred areas of my colon and cause terrible infections. Nuts, esp. roasted nuts have a fungus that gives me bowel infections. High fiber breads cause terrible pain and inflammation. Alot of fiber is great for healthy people; for me it leads to bleeding and inflammation, as well as infection.

I try to balance healthful food with what I am able to tolerate, seems to work for me, plus I take lots of probiotics and vitamins.

I heard some of the biologics don't suppress the immune system but then you need to worry about other things like tuberculosis.

I am very careful as you all mentioned with washing properly, carrying sanitizer and never touching my face. Since I have been on 6mp I have gotten shingles, bronchiitis a few times and other health problems so I know that this must be the reason.

Like mountaingem said the fiber seems to be a real issue as it causes inflammation to get further irritated since its tougher to digest. I am not sure it is just fiber though because when I juice fruits if I combine too many it seems to give me pains as well.

I used to take 6MP for years and at a higher dose than I'm on now and after a while, I didn't get sick that often. In fact, I don't remember getting sick very often when I was on 65mg of it. I recently started taking it again (50mg) a little over a month ago and I've been sick almost the whole time. Almost like my body needs to get used to it all over again. Right now I'm still battling a pneumonia. Bronchitis was going around and I guess I got it and it turned into a pneumonia. Good times. As long as it puts me back into remission than I'm ok with it but then again, I'm not working right now so I can see how it would be frustrating at first.

I'm told that it would help to get a flu shot every year as well while on 6MP.

Hi nogutsnoglory,
I found my health improved the most when I stopped consuming all sugar and carbohydrates. Do some research and check out what fruit juice really is, once you dig through the usual lies of how good fruit juice is, you will find all it is, is water, SUGAR and fiber. I used to eat so much fruit because I was lead to believe that it was good for me. In actual fact the sugar was partly the cause of keeping the inflammation active and the fibre was further irritating my already inflamed gut.

There is a huge difference between refined sugar and naturally occuring sugar in fruit. Juice is worse for you than the raw product because it's so condensed.

I'm not on any IBD meds yet but when my ME was at it's worst I picked up every infection going. I started a herbal remedy Echineacea and I hardly ever get sick with those things now (even in my current poor state of health). Can have it as tea or as a pill, I take one very day.

Star I would understand how juice is more condensed but in my case. I kept it simple just juiced very little and it seems ok. I wouldn't juice too much though.
