I have developed a red, sometimes itchy, patches in several places underneath my wafer/flange (the paper-like part). It is only around the edge of the wafer and seems to be spreading around the entire edge of the wafer. I have been using Convatec Convexit wafers for about 20 years and use Eakin Shield Barrier around my stoma and have no skin issues where the Eakin has been used. . The patches "weep" slightly. Stomahesive powder helps somewhat, Niastatin powder does not. Initially I got this after using adhesive remover and it went away. Now it is back again and I have not used any adhesive remover. Will see wound care on Monday. Last time we decided it was fungus, but the nystatin powder is not effective and neither is oral. I'm thinking that I may have developed an allergy to the adhesive. Any thoughts and particularly any suggestions to "dry" things up. Thanks. Kitty N.

Hi,
My girl is the IBD'er and has an adhesive allergy. Matter of fact my son and I do also.
That sounds about right with what you describe. We also have to use a skin barrier protectant.
Of course be careful, my Grace is prone to cellulitis around her stoma (she has a g-tube). With the weeping you describe watch it closely.

Let us know what you find out.

If you can get a hold of a few sample of wafer that are entirely in "gum" like stuff, I would give that a try. I would believe the adhesive differ in that material compared to the tape. I did react occasionally to certain tapes but never to the gum. It seems to promote healing in reality. Stomahesive no-tape wafer, coloplast sensura, etc.

Also, there are some dressing that helps a lot with the weeping. I like the duoderm extra thin. It really promote healing but it could maybe be tricky to not compromise the appliance adherence. In general I was fine but I only use gum base plate with it so I would no know about the tape ones. This has helped me the most when I was dealing with irritation from fistula underneath my wafer.

A regular problem for me. Doc perscribed a flow vent puffer. Use it on the skin. Dust with stoma powder thef dab (don't wipe) with skin barrier. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do have "gum"-like adhesive wafer that I could try. The flow vent puffer that you describe is, I assume, a bottle with hole in the top (small) that you squeeze and powder comes out like the stomahesive powder, correct? Will let know results after I see wound care. I do have fistulas on my abdomen, but the irritation is not in those area, I think, because I am using the duoderm over the top of them.

Hi. Flow vent puffer is an inhaler people with asthma use. Its a steroid mist which reduces irritation.
