Does anyone know if smoke from forest fires could trigger a flare? We have been socked in by so much smoke from forest fires surrounding us - most days are an orange level air pollution alert - Jack had been feeling so well but last two weeks he has really been complaining about stomach pain and he is not eating again! I know that smoking can make crohn's symptoms worse so I'm wondering if there is some kind of correlation.
We have a GI appt on the 2nd but not sure if I should get him in sooner or just try and ride it out. I don't want it to get worse.

I bet it's possible. Allergies can cause a flare. So if he's constantly breathing in smoke and histamines are produced, it probably could cause the same type of reaction. Ask the dr if he could take allergy med like claritin and if it would help.

Thanks, I will call and ask I just called to ask if they wanted us to do labs so as soon as he calls back I will ask. I never thought of it being like allergies. It is really really bad, you can hardly see in front of you and the sky is all orangey (if that is even a word) and the sun is bright red when it rises and sets. It is really eerie.
I know we are all coughing and sneezing, maybe claritin for the whole family

If you can see a haze not good.
Do you have central air ?
Room hepa filter?
DS has severe allergies/ asthma any smoke from any source causes inflammation in the lungs of healthy people in ds he will have an asthma flare. Not sure on but I assume Ibd flare as well since anytime one of his systems goes down he others cant keep up.
If you go out have a handkerchief/ scarf over your mouth nose to filter the air from your lungs.

I wouldn't rule it out and I certainly agree about the allergy aspect of things.

Another thing to consider is the trapped heat and dehydration.

Good luck! I hope the smoke clears soon!

We tried the claritin and it seemed to make a difference anyways he is feeling better and at 1/2 rack of ribs today (Yahoo!). Still no relief from the smoke, everybody's eyes are watering and we are all coughing. They're saying we may have rain next week. I hope so it has gotten cool enough at night to sleep with the windows open but we haven't been able to with all the smoke. Now that he is feeling better the hubby is having a pretty bad flare :poo: (I've got to assume it is the smoke again).

Yeah! It rained I can see blue sky this morning. Still worried it may have all been too much he is getting eczema on his scalp usually a precursor to a flare but I'm going to keep my stingers and toes crossed it will go away

Glad the smoke is clearing up!!! I hope he can avoid a flare!! Crossing my fingers and toes too! (By the way, hoping you were crossing your 'fingers' and not 'stingers'! )

:rof: There are certainly days I wish I had 'stingers' but yes fingers - that's what happens when you are trying to type on a phone.
I did talk to Dr. and he doesn't want to order any labs before our appt. next week, he wants to look at him and talk to him before he decides which labs need to be done. I hope that is good, he has always had us do labs before appt's so we can talk about adjusting meds or options at the appt.

 What? You don't have stingers? I thought all crohn's moms had stingers? :ylol:

Glad the smoke has cleared! I hope everything clears up and the Dr appointment goes well next week. Better pack a jar of bees just in case (since you haven't grown your stingers yet:wink:)
