My 16 yr old daughter, M, has recently been to the GI for rectal bleeding. Doc put her on Apriso (mesalamine) and suppositories for active fissure. Bleeding stopped for a little bit but then came back and worsened.

We went back to the GI yesterday and she started M on flagyl and stopped the suppositories.

I also asked for fecal cal test b/c we have no baseline of inflammation markers and no scopes to date b/c she presented too high risk. We are trying to get to a scope in Aug as she is healing from ileocecal resection just 4 weeks ago.

In the meantime, when we collected the stool for the fecal cal test we saw there is also blood inside the stool. So the bleeding is not only coming from the rectal area but possibly from higher up I'm assuming?

The flagyl seems to have set off a firestorm of activity with very bad bloody diarrhea. Normally M has firm, 1x day poops.

Right now she feels awful. I'm waiting for GI to call me back and prob switch her off of flagyl, but then what?

Does anyone else have experience w/similar set of conditions?

Sorry no advice, just lots of support. We had our first bloody diarrhea yesterday nearly 4 years after dx and Jack has been taking some antibiotics since Thursday so I'm waiting for the GI to call back as well. Sent stool sample yesterday for some testing.
Hope you get answers soon. Hang in there.

Hey greypup,

My two have not had the experience your lass is post op although the rectal bleeding has been going on for sometime hasn't it? :ghug:

My son was on Flagyl for 6 months with no issue.

Can they not do a flexi sig just to see what is happening in the rectal area?

I see the Apriso was started for the fissure. I wondered why they put her on that but realise now. It is a mild drug, has there been talk of putting her on something else for the maintenance of her Crohn's?

Is she still on Pred?

Sorry for all the questions mum!

we are now in hospital b/c pain became unbearable overnight. thankfully, they havent found anything.

m is not on pred. she was weaned off a couple of weeks ago. they started apriso to calm the colon while awaiting scopes that we will have clearance for in august.

i wish they could do flex sig but not so far and maybe b/c of the active fissure it would be too difficult.

they said she def has a sensitive stomach to have such a reaction to flagyl.

Oh my goodness Linda! :ghug: I am so sorry to hear that your daughter was in so much she had to go to hospital. I hope they have settled things for her.

Have symptoms worsened since ceasing the Pred?

It certainly seems to link up with the Flagyl. So she had no diarrhoea prior to the Flagyl?

the symptoms worsened since starting flagyl.

the plan was/is to replace flagyl w/canasa suppositories to ease the inflammation around fissure and hopefully promote healing. GI has also asked M to avoid dairy this week.

So sorry your daughter is having such a hard time. I don't have any experience with this issue, just wanted to send a hug. I hope that things are improving soon!

M was discharged today - it's our 6th time admitted to hosp since April - enuf!!! The GI team is confident the symptoms and timing was all due to the flagyl. It did not agree with her.

Her new plan is to increase dose of Apriso (mesalamine) from 2 to 3 capsules a day.
And has begun taking the canasa suppositories.

She pooped today before leaving hospital and it has returned to firm ;-)

Hopefully we will also be able to get to the scopes in another couple of weeks and have more information to work with.
