My parents have a really nice, Welsh Pemboke Corgi. He is fluffy and loveable like a big teddy bear. That dog has the touchiest stomach in the canine world. The vet says he okay, but he needs to stick to a certain dog food. In the past, if given scraps, or other dog food, he would become very gaseous, or vomit or go diarrhea. Can dogs get inflammatory bowel disease? My brother started the joke by saying, "Oliver (the Corgi) has Crohn's Disease." I might need to look that up.

My beagle is like a vacuum cleaner. He'll suck anything up, and he never seems to get sick. He has a cast iron stomach.

Aww I hope he does not have Crohns.
My dog gets gaseous sometimes and when he does I cannot believe that it comes out of such a tiny little guy...He smells rotten. Like something died in him.
I hope they cannot get IBD...I cannot imagine how that would be for them....

My parents really have it bad with Oliver. They give everybody strict orders not to feed him anything but his special dog food. When Scott and I were dog sitting a couple of years back we had to be so careful with him. He snuck and ate our dog's food and we had the stink and mess to deal with. While growing up, we always had dogs. Oliver is the only one that has had such a sensitive stomach.

Hey Andi, to answer your question - yes, animals like cats & dogs CAN get IBD, unfortunately. I have a co-worker whose dog has IBD, and she gives it prednisone every day (apparently it's an older dog, so the pred doesn't make it totally hyper).

I've got a Pembroke Welsh corgi myself. If I feed her a low-quality dog food or any type of people food, she farts up a storm (she can clear a room faster than I can!), and she also belches nearly to the point of vomiting. It's pretty gross. But it might just be a corgi thing? Whenever we take our dog to the park, she usually poos 2 or 3 times (she seems to save it up until we go to the park, she loves pooping there for some weird reason!). Her first poo is usually solid and normal, but after that it gets looser and more diarrhea. If she goes 3 or more times, it's pretty much just brown liquid. So again, maybe just a corgi thing?

Rebecca85's mother's dog was recently diagnosed as having probable IBD - here's that thread:

Wouldn't it be the cherry on top of a not-so-yummy sundae if our animals had IBD or IBS? The pain for them and the pain-in-purse strings for us would make for a stressful time!

My mum's dog has some sort of IBD. She has constantly loose stools, often with bleeding. She had exploratory surgery, which found inflammation, but biopsies were inconclusive. Flagyl has stopped the bleeding, we think, but not the diarrhoea. She is also on a prescription diet.

My parent's dog has colitis. this was the dog that replaced me when I moved out, we are very similar. We both have colitis, and are very furry.

lol!:rof: The dog probably helped with that empty nest syndrome we hear so much about!

I love it! Interesting how we come to chose our pets. I think Oliver is taking the place of my brother and I. Too bad they waited so long to get Ollie.

It may be a Corgi things as well. Beagles have been around since the days of the Romans, so they are one of the healthier breeds. A lot of people find their baying annoying. I love those hound voices. I guess poor Corgi have touchy stomaches.

My dog has food allergies and intolerances. She's an Akita cross. I've never paid to have her tested or scoped, but I have wondered if she could have some kind of doggy-IBS or IBD. :) I know for sure that rice is a no-no - she gets diarrhea almost immediately, and within 24 hours her ears get very itchy and swollen. It's so strange, rice is usually a safe food for dogs. I have to feed her a very specialized no-grain diet, and it seems to agree with her! We're such a match, us two!!! :D
