Hi all,
I'm interested in starting the specific carbohydrate diet. However, I've got a few big concerns with it. It seems like I may be allowed no carbs at all. If so, its going to be hard to only eat meat and fruit every day. Are there any safe carbs like tortilla or simple white bread/rice? What do you normally eat for dinner/lunch that will fill you up? Thanks very much.

you can eat vegetables, but not if they're canned.

no grains or grain products of ANY kind are allowed. no rice, no corn, no quinoa, no wheat, no oats, no rye, no barley, no nothing.

nut flour is used as a substitute for wheat flour, and can be made into all sorts of pastries and breads.

i don't follow the scd but i don't eat any grains or dairy. i eat lots of vegetables. i like to stir-fry a bunch of different kinds and eat some chicken or fish on the side. and i snack on fruit like no other!

there are books and websites that will help you determine what is allowed and what isn't and give you lots of recipes. There are also a few people on this forum who follow the scd who can give you lots of info!

You may have only honey as a sugar, no starches, di or polysacchrides(complex sugars) diet sodas are allowed once a week. (I don't do it that often, once every couple of weeks, usually when I go bowling)

RHOV pretty much covered the rest. I love the peanut butter cookies and the peanut butter brownies, and the honey frosting!!! That's what I snack on, and pickles and cheese. If you buy a book specifically for the SCD they will give you specific recipies, such as the book in my signature.

i actually disagree with RHOV although everyone is different. rice, quinoa, and wheat are great for me and filling as well as a huge staple of my diet. refined wheat products work well.

i was referring to what was allowed on the SCD. the diet forbids any type of grains.

Also if you are gluten sensitive, refined wheat products may not be a good idea. Matter of fact, anything refined or processed, I would stay away from, and you should probably too.

Well if one has to choose a grain product, with Crohns I'd say refined (white bread, white rice) over whole grain and raw, due to the inflammation, which is where the premise of the low residue comes in. For normal people, I'd state whole grain any day, we're the sad exception to that though (no nutrients or substance in refined). If you're avoiding gluten though, there's probably more of it in unrefined, because gluten is simply wheat's protein, and there's almost none of that in white bread/rice, etc....

I'm not saying dont' avoid them, if avoiding them all helps, do it.

I agree with Benson if it affects you stay away from it just experiment with what works. I know for me refined wheat products are the way to go and whole grain and whole wheat is bothersome.
