Specific carbohydrate diet

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

I have been researching this for a bit now, and have "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" at home. I know there are other posts on this forum about this diet. I am reluctant to do this though, because a lot of my "safe" foods are on the SCD illegal list, and a lot of the legal foods on the SCD list really irritate me.

I'd like to hear anyone else's experiences too!

I have not received the book yet but have read bit and pieces online and realised that I have to get prepared for this because I do use a lot of grains. I have to change my breakfast completely. I love my oatmeal porridge with soymilk! I do not feel well eating fruits and veg in the morning. I realised that I can not stop using grains just in one day I have to find some substitutes to make sure I would not be hungry all the time and of course I have to read the book.

I found SCD didn't work for me but it lead to a diet that did.
I recommend the book though.

Lamb and avocado for breakfast.
Eggs and (SCD legal) Bacon for breakfast.
Fruit Smoothies, Salad, Fish, Omelette, Steak, Almond muffins......
It is a change in thinking that is required, and a lifelong addiction (to sugar and grain) to be overcome.
It is likely that some grains are far worse than other but the only way to find out is give them all up and reintroduce them one at a time

same as hugh tried it for 3 months and no results but did lead to me making my own diet

Also when the book was written was like in the late 60's-70's so there are lots of things that are considered illegal can be eaten as there has been more research on them like sweet potato i can eat it no probs as its been found to be more like pumpkin than potato and other supplements and things which are considered illegal can now be eaten also there are heaps of legal store bought things out there now have a look at this link http://nomorecrohns.com/preparedproducts.aspx

hi tantija.

i was diagnosed with crohn's in early 2010, and after having little success with conventional IBD medications, i decided to try the SCD 11 months ago. although i've experienced some ups and downs (which "breaking the vicious cycle" prepares you for), i am seeing significant improvement in my condition. i have practically no abdominal cramping, hardly experience diarrhea anymore, have a lot more energy, and feel that i am thinking clearly again. this obviously is not an easy diet to follow, and requires a significant change in lifestyle (i cook way more than i ever used to), but i'd say it's definitely worth it - it has changed my life dramatically! you may also want to check out the GAPS diet, which is based on the SCD, but eliminates dairy for those who are more intolerant of lactose.

good luck with it, and let me know if you want any tips on getting started and keeping up the diet!

I tried it and it didn't work too well for me. In fact I lost a lot of weight while on it which for a chronie is a very bad thing. Good luck to you though I hope you have a different experience!

Here's my favorite breakfast on the SCD:

2 cups almond flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup melted butter
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon SCD yogurt (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1/2 cup blueberries

Heat oven to 325 degrees.
Mix dry ingredients
Add the wet ingredients
Combine the two, then gently fold in the blueberries.

The dough should be quite stiff, add more flour if not.

Scoop up about 2 tablespoons and place on parchment lined baking sheet. Space about two inches apart.

Bake until golden brown abou 12- 15 minutes.

Serve warm

Nice to see two active threads on the SC Diet on these forums.

I'm a 23 year old male, I've been on the SCD for 10 months now, and it's great. I've got more energy than most "regular" people I know and am symptom free. I weened off all medications after the first couple of months.

I've always been underweight (had Crohn's since I was 11), and since I started the diet and started lifting weights a few months ago I've put on 15 pounds.

So it's safe to say I'm a believer. I have no plans of stopping.

I met Elaine Gottschall at one of her last lectures in San Francisco. She wrote the book, http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info

It works for me, 14 years later. Put me in remission many times. VERY EASY DIET, if you are determined to clean out the PROCESSED FOODS which kill us.

Eating natural unprocessed foods is BEST.

Thanks to everyone!
I just come back from holiday (back home) so was not following exactly the diet, even I removed all the grains, sugar, potatoes, bread I was still using fresh salad did not start from the cooked vegetables as advised. Will start now in a proper way. But after 2 weeks of the diet the blood tests results have improved! My C reactive protein was all the year 10-21 and now is only 4! I am very impressed! Have noticed that cheddar cheese makes diarrhoea worse, probably have to look for more mature cheese.
And thank you for the recipe going to try any kind of cookies and pancakes as all the time hungry :)) Have fed up eating scrambled eggs every morning :))

Thanks again!!!
