Hey!
Long time lurker first time poster here! My name is CrashedNoises and I'm pleased to meet you. What's your name and your favourite colour? Mine is blue and I hope we become best friends! (we won't if your favourite colour isn't blue too tho)
So my gastroenterologist has had this wacky idea to start me on Humira tomorrow based on the recommendation of one of the colorectal surgeons who I have seen recently. For the last few years I have been suffering from pretty severe perianal disease (IT'S EVEN BETTER THAN IT SOUNDS I PROMISE) and I have a good few incision and drainages of abscesses and various other operations. Currently I have, like, I think two setons in situ in some fistulas I have developed. Anyway! None of these operations have gone particularly well and I have been having constant discharge and recurrent infections since basically 2008 now. In that time my doctors have tried me on azathioprine and infliximab for a while, but it caused my infections down there to get considerably worse and so it was discontinued. Hence I am kind of worried about starting Humira tomorrow. I have had an MRI scan done recently and the doctors seem pretty happy that the, uhh, collections or whatever are draining so there shouldn't really be an issue with starting it. Also I had an examination under anaesthesia a few months ago which was when the most recent seton was inserted. I saw the surgeon who did that procedure a few days ago and he too was happy for the Humira to go ahead. I finished a course of antibiotics (flucloxacillin) last week as well, as I had been having some increased pain down below (although no fevers or anything). I have taken lots and lots of antibiotics over the years, oh man. My stomach is not happy!
I don't really know what I am specifically asking for here. I guess reassurances, experiences and just general information from people who have been in a similar situation? I have been busy scaring myself to smithereens reading about all the myriad of exotic and exciting side effects of Humira. Oh, one think I have been specifically reading about is people getting more dental caries whilst taking things like Humira. Have any of you experienced anything like that? I have already had enough of those so I don't really want anymore. Additionally my dentist wants me to have some what-I-don't-think-technically-are wisdom teeth removed eventually. I am waiting for that hospital referral to come through (so it will probably be a long long way away when cars are powered by sunshine and rainbows). I have told the nurses at hospital about this and they think it will be alright to start the Humira regardless. I have just been wondering because I have read some stuff indicating that it is undesirable to have surgery when taking anti-TNFs...
Some general information about me: 23 years old, male, live in the UK, have had IBD since 9 years old, taken nearly every drug under the sun at some point with sort of lacklustre results, have had partial colectomy and mucosal proctectomy or something like that (only a very small amount of my rectum remains apparently - it's causing me a lot of problems though!), permanent ileostomy, original diagnosis of indeterminate colitis although I think my doctors believe it to be more like Crohn's disease now with the fistulising disease and whatnot, underweight, no gf, watches too many cartoons.
My doctors are keen for me to have the last part of my rectum removed (the proctectomy to end all other proctectomies) if I don't have a good response to Humira. Which is something I kind of want to avoid, at least for the time being, as I have had a not-so-great experience after the other operations I have had. The idea of having a permanent permanent ileostomy sort of irks me too now that I am not a child anymore (MAYBE YOU CAN GUESS WHY). My doctors at the time told me that the coloectomy I had should basically cure me. That was over a decade ago now! The complications of this specific procedure worry me too, like nerve damage and fertility problems and stuff... Gah! IBD PLS GO. TELL ME IF YOU HAVE HAD ALL OF YOUR RECTUM REMOVED I WANT TO INTERROGATE YOU.
Okay okay that's enough rambling for now. Thanks for reading and I literally cannot wait to read any/all responses I get. CANNOT. WAIT.
Sorry for the lack of readability! Literacy is not my strong suit you may have noticed.
