Hi there

the last couple of days ive been crippled with extreme shooting pains just above my belly button (right across my stomach) which comes in intervals of maybe 10 seconds of horrific pain then it goes away for a few mins then comes back. I have colitis but never experience pain like this. It makes me feel bloated and cant stand up straight.

It happened the next morning after i was drinking lager in my local pub and had a kebab on my way home. At first i thought it could be wind but surely wind wouldnt cause this terrible pain. Ive genuinly never felt anything like it. Today its not as bad, i have larger intervals between the pain.

Someone told me it may be a helicobacter or something. Does this sound farmilliar with anyone?

Thanks

Nicky

For me, I tend to get more abdominal gas the day after having alcohol. I believe it alters the balance of the flora, and the gas is a by-product. If you have a narrowing in your bowels, the gas could indeed cause some pain. Here's hoping that it resolves itself.

Hi, Nicky!

What kind of colitis do you have and where is it located? Where do you usually feel pain from the colitis?

The type of pain you described is what I typically experience from Crohn's (although it is located just below my belly button). What sort of pain is usual for you?

Like Shamrock said, it's possible the alcohol had something to do with it. Do you drink often, or have you ever found it to worsen your symptoms in any way?

Hey, I get shooting pains above my belly button. Sounds like you've never had the pain before so it would be hard to determine if its from beer. Sounds like the pain is getting a lot better?

When I first got diagnosed I was diagnosed with UC and was drinking carona then was having bleeding and pain like you described well guess what got changed to crohn's and got told to stay away from alcohol for good.

Also got told to stay away from alcohol in chronic and inflammatory disease as it can worsen symptoms

Geez, I am not sure, I myself cannot drink any alcohol( wish I could though,I miss an occasional glass of wine), No my bladder wont let me( I have IC). But one of my best friends husbands has UC. He drinks beer all the time and it has No effect on his UC. I even asked my friend doesn't it bother him drinking like that, and she said no. She said he claims it helps him! Go figure. I dont get it, I always assumed that with Any inflammatory disease you are suppose to avoid acohol. Anyhow, hope you are feeling better by now...

hey my friend. youd be suprised how much pain simple trapped wind can cause. try some windeze and see what happens. if that doesnt help then maybe your symptom is something new like the beginning of a stricture or narrowing. some new intestinal imflammation maybe. if so then beer wont help but kebabs will be your enemy. i suggest you just take a coupke weeks off the shit till you can get a specialist to diagnose it properly. a couple of weeks off the piss wont hurt you but ending up with a section removal and the very real possibility of a bag will. take care brother, god bless

Thanks alot for all your messages folks

sarahbear - the doctors dont know what type of IBD it is, they have called it UC, Crohns, proctitis, you name it they have called it that. All my inflammation is located at the rectum so i dont have the option of having an inflammed section/stricture removed unless i want a bag for good which i dont so im hoping its not that.

I also dont get much pain atall from my disease, thats why it was worrying when i was getting this new pain. Its dissapeared and im putting it down to trapped wind but im still a bit dubious that trapped wind could nearly floor a 6ft 2, 15 stone man lke myself lol

thanks everyone else for there replies, its much appreciated :)

btw i havent been to a doctor over the pain, was slightly scared they would keep me in over christmas, thankfully it dissapeared :)

I'm glad you're feeling better. :)

If it happens again or you experience any other strange symptoms, I'd suggest you do call/see your doctor about it. Since they're not 100% certain on your diagnosis, it might help get things figured out. :)
