Feeling very down at the moment! Usually just carry on with what life throws but have bad days now and then.
Andrew has his MRI on Tuesday and although I am glad, I am terrified what it will show. Worried it will be more complicated than we are all hoping.
Also it it after midnight and I have only just managed to get my daughter off to sleep through her pain.
Question!! She says she feels like someone is stabbing a knife into her bottom over and over. Does anyone know of anything like this? We have been back and forward to the docs for 4 years as she gets it on and off. It started when she was 5 when she woke up screaming with pain in her bottom and it lasted on and off for 5 weeks. Now she gets it for a few days here and there and then it goes away again. Poor thing is terrified to go to the doctors as she doesn't want them looking at her bottom again (there is nothing to see on the skin anyway). I feel very petty but I have had enough!

Hey, Sascot. I know the feeling, dear. I wish they'd hop to surgery already, the delay would be driving me totally and utterly mad and I too would be obsessing and envisioning the worst. That's how I roll. :hallo3:

As to your girl, what in the HECK? With your fella's history of course IBD snaps to mind. But I am assuming they've checked her, bloods etc?
Is it like her rectum itself that hurts, or higher up? While pooing or afterwards? I am wondering about a fissure. V had one at dx that killed but was INVISIBLE until I REALLY looked.

My dad used to get spasms in his rectum and a bit higher up inside. Back then the only thing he could do was sit on a heating pad. So glad we have better living through pharmaceuticals! I wonder if a anti-cramp med like Levsin or Bentyl would be helpful?

Sascot,

Bless your heart! I can see where you are at the end of your rope as it seems like you've been having to wait forever for answers for Andrew. Waiting is pure torture and the mind can really run away with itself. Praying for patience and that Tuesday will get here quickly!! I hope your daughter's pain passes quickly too. ((((hugs))))

Hey Sascot,

Oh hun, I so know that feeling......I felt exactly the same way when Matt had his progress scan just prior to surgery. I was like a cat on a hot tin roof and as nervous as all hell. To me the feeling was like I was going to be looking into a crystal ball and I wasn't so sure that I wanted to see it all in black and white...all too real.

Oh my, your poor daughter, bless her. There are a couple of things that I can think of that might explain away what she has. The first description of the stabbing and how it presented sounds like Proctalgia Fugax. It is not overly uncommon and does affect females far more than males and it is thought be a result of a spasm in the levator muscle. It is one of those conditions that the diagnosis made based on a patients history and by ruling out other conditions. Unfortunately there is no good explanation or treatment for the condition.

The second presentation you describe sounds a little more like Levitor Ani Syndrome as the pain lasts a few days before subsiding. Again it involves the spasm of muscles, this time ?pelvic floor.

Since it is all connected maybe she has one or the other or both???

Even though research suggests that treatments often don't work perhaps you could try...hot baths, ensure regular bowel regimens, massage therapy, perineal strengthening exercises and speak to the doctor about pain killers, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, that sort of thing.

Good luck hun!

Hey Sascot,

I'm sorry you're feeling down... it's tough not to feel overwhelmed at times when your kids are sick and you're exhausted! :( I've been there many a time. :ghug: Actually, we've all been there!

I hope all goes well on Tuesday and there are no surprises. And that you and Andrew can move on with treatment! And, I so hope you can get some answers for your daughter. The worry and fear of the unknown can certainly be hard to bear.

We're all here for you! :ghug:

I agree with Dusty, the stabbing sounds like muscle spasms. I get them occasionally, usually when I need the toilet and have to 'hold'. The pain can drop me to the floor, luckily it only lasts a few minutes until I get to the toilet (or not!).

Thanks alot everyone!! Shattered - went to bed just after midnight to be wakened up at 2am till 4.30am with Andrew feeling sick (prob all the Easter chocolate:lol:).
Thanks for the ideas on Amy, Dusty I agree with i'maboveitall - your font of knowledge always impresses. I sometimes feel like I know more about things than the GP (thanks to my mom who was an excellent GP) but I bow down to your superior brain! :ycool::worthy:
