I found this old study that looked at 30 people recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and looked at their diet compared to a control group. It was interesting that while protein and fat consumption was about the same, total fibre consumption was a bit less in those recently diagnosed with Crohn's and the total refined sugar intake of those diagnosed with Crohn's was about twice as high as the diets of the control group. Fruit and vegetable consumption was also lower in the group that was recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

I found this interesting as my diet pre-crohn's was low in fruit/vegetable consumption and higher in refined sugar and low fibre (I ate a lot of white bread, which is low in fibre and has refined sugar). I am fortunate that I can now tolerate a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and fibre (including from lentils).

The study can be found here.

I was the opposite, I was eating tons of healthy foods (we all know those "blacklisted" residue foods that are good for normal folk that make our insides cry).....I watched my sugar very well, and timed my intake for insulin spikes to only post workout, otherwise, slow carbs with Glycemic Indices well below 100 for most foods. My oddity was still there though, but I doubt that gave me Crohns (nope, have no proof, just theorizing)

Interesting correlation, Mike, nonetheless.

I've always had tummy problems, even as a child, so
I never could tolerate a lot of fiber. So whether or not that
caused me to get bad Crohn's, I don't know, but I never could eat
those things anyway.

Actually, I can believe it. My Crohn's symptoms came on during the time of my life when I ate fast food almost daily, over-indulged in sweets, and in general, gained 25 lbs over a period of 1.5 years. Also, I are very little fiber, so this study makes some sense to me.

Now, I completely eliminated refined sugars (as part of SCD) and are beginning to eat foods higher in fiber, with great success.

Just my $0.02

wow, this totally is true for me. i have had my stages where i'd eat quite healthy but i'd say majority of my life i've eaten a lot of food high in refined sugars... i thought i was lucky that my blood sugar was always good... but this study may be on to something. i've heard there are foods categorized as 'inflammatory foods'

The responses here seem all over the chart, just like all other facets of IBD (no surprise, kind of used to that anomalous nature, friggen disease is an immunological shape-shifting SOB).....I believe a correlation does not equal a causation, though it does spark possibilities and needed research. That said, I still think my Crohns wasn't a result of healthy eating, and was from something else, perhaps immune related or pathogenic in nature.

Yep. My mom wouldn't even let us have Fruit Loops unless they were "diluted" with Cheerios, to limit the sugar. Same with Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes, she would mix them as a "treat". We had fruit for dessert, sat at the table for hours finishing my damn brussel sprouts and cauliflower etc....

I grew up in Leave It to Beaver, and all my peers knew it. (you may have noticed I carry animosity towards my childhood)

yeah, I was that kid pulling out a bologna sandwich and a baggie of grapes, thermos of milk...in the middle of kids with Cheetos, Hi-C, Fun Fruits, pop, Capri Sun, etc....Oh, and I went to daycare until I was in 5th grade, the bullies liked that one too. :voodoo:

But, I figure I rose above it (would like to think I did) and it forged the tenacious person I am today...

I always had problems with sore stomachs etc but it got much worse after I had Glandular fever when I was 16. I then ate loads of junk food which made me really ill. I was nearly symtom free for a few years, then lots of stressful situations made it flare it has never really gone for long. So I dont think it caused my Crohns btu it certainly made it worse.
