I had my colectemy on the 26th and was lucky enough to not get a bag for any time. I am glad it is over. i have had a great doctor and the nursing staff was exceptional. I also have a very protective husband and great support at home as well with my kids and other family members. I want to thank you all for the support and advice given when I needed it. I did spend 10 days in the hospital. They were not pleasent but am glad it was there and not at home. i love my family but really dont want to put them through that. I am home 3 days now and feeling pretty good. I pray it stays that waay and for a long time. :thumright:

This sounds like wonderful news, shalin! I am hoping for a speedy recovery and lasting health for you. Isn't it just a totally different feeling when you're able to first be at home?

Sawdust it is an amazing feeling to be at home. Especially with all who love and care for me. I am truely blessed and I am happy.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you get a colectomy and not have an ostomy bag? Just wondering how does that work.

Not a stupid question. I asked her that also. I have a titanium staple holding my small intestines to my rectum. I am able to function well without a bag. I asked the doctor also if it is called a complete colectomy. She said yes just because I still have my rectum doesn't mean I didn't have a complete colectomy. I am very excited not to have a bag. I was not mentally and emotionally ready for that. I give great admeration to those who have one. You are very strong and able people.

Thanks for explaining. I don't have mine just yet. Next Wednesday is my big day. I don't have much choice they say it all has to come out.

Well just remember and keep thinking positive. I am in less pain now than what I was before surgery. I would cry constantly due to the pain in my right side. Now it is just an aching pain from the surgery. More like a headache compared to a severe migraine. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You will do fine and enjoy life afterwards

Thanks, The thing is though I feel great right now! I know that is better for surgery. I'm not having the proctocolectomy because I'm in a major flare. It is because I have an area of dysplasia in my colon.

So it has been just after 3 weeks since surgery. I am doing good but have a concern that may be nothing but since this has never happened before I thought I would ask those who have been through it. I have recently started to have green bowel movements. My husband says it just means it has moved to quickly through my system. He is healthy and no bowel issues ever. I love him dearly but my system doesn't work like his. So it is a sign of infection or is it truely normal?

Unless you have a really foul odor of infection, it's normal. Almost everything that comes out of me is green. It's bile. Your husband is correct.

Shalin, thanks for sharing. I have 20cm of rectum left and have had stoma for 15 months. My reversal is scheduled for May 29. I'd be interested to hear about your progress. Are stools always loose? You taking loperamide? How many bowel motions per day.

I got to say having a bag seems normal to me now, going back to the toilet the 'normal' way seems odd. Lol.
