Anyone else taking Sulfasalazine? I have been taking it for years and generally it works fine. Last time I had a flare-up was about a year ago.

Unfortunately, I'm having a flare-up now and, for the first time in years, since I was diagnosed, actually, I'm seeing blood in my stool at times.

I'm taking Loperamide Hydrochloride 2 mg every time I have a loose stool movement and that definitely helped the cramping and slowed things down.

It's still loose but only once or twice a day. I'm still taking one every time to keep things slow but this is the longest I've ever had a flare-up (2 wks) and the longest I've ever taken Loperamide Hydrochloride, too.

The specialist I originally saw wanted to instantly put me on steroids years ago so I don't deal with him any more (and have heard he's a jerk anyway) but I'm wondering if maybe Sulfaslazine is no longer working for me? I know it's not so common any more but it's worked well for well over 7 years. I MIGHT be able to convince my new family doc to switch me to the new stuff (the 5 ASA stuff) but not sure. I'm not getting another scope if I can help it.

I have no hemmorhoids or fissures this time (haven't since I was diagnosed) since I know how to prevent them so all in all I'm doing okay but I'm tired of this and just want things to go back to normal. Maybe after all these years, it's intensifying. I hope not. :(

Hi there
I actually just posted as to why my daughter's Dr prescribed her Sulfasalazine instead of one of the 5 ASA meds without sulphur....

Sorry that you are having a flare-up....we are very new to all this...my daughter is only 6...and just diagnosed in November.
I am just trying to figure out what meds she should be on...but am going to ask why the sulphur based one.

i was taking it for my arthritis but since i was taking Asacol as well and they are the same medication. I was taken of it. the difference between all the different Sulfasalazine type meds are where the medication is released. you might need one with a different coating or more of it.
