I have an early appointment with a surgeon tomorrow.

We'll discuss open or laproscopic surgery for 2 areas
1. dilation or resegment (upper left quad)
2. cutting out bleeding ulcer area. (lower right quad)

What questions should I ask? What question did you wish you asked?

My blood levels are down again I just had 2 units a few weeks ago and almost ready for another. Sigh. I thought sterroids were working becasue I haven't seen blood but hematologist said I am bleeding. Got another Procrit shot today.

Thanks so much for your help.

I've only had outpatient fistula surgery, so I can't really help you in the question department, but for some reason I am thinking that I have heard that you shouldn't be on steroids if you are having surgery. And I don't even remember the reason, so maybe I am mistaken - but for some reason that is in my brain.
Good luck with your appointment.

i think they prefer you not to be on steroids mmbee, i dont think its a rule to be off them before surgery. good point tho.

Before I got my dilation I was asked if I had taken any oral steroids. I'm not sure but maybe they stick around in your stomach longer or something or maybe the steroids react poorly with the anesthesia or maybe they have to give more anesthesia. Thats also why they ask if you drink or do drugs because they will have to give more anesthesia. That's all I got but I'm not 100% sure. Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.

I think that they don't like when you're on steroids for surgery because it effects the healing process, but if you are on steroids they do continue them through surgery. Good luck

My surgeon said that the healing process is longer when your on Steroids. She also told me that she patient that was on Steroids for a very long time and during the surgery she said the intestines were just mush. I believe she said that she had to cancel the surgery.

That was my experience. The plan was to wean me off the Prednisone before the surgery, but my condition declined too rapidly and I had to get the surgery. I was only on about 20mg of Pred at the time. I healed quickly and didn't have any problems.

I would ask what you can expect afterwards as far as pain goes...because now every time I get a cramp, I'm wondering if it's the CD or just a healing pain...

My third surgery I was on a high dose of steroids and my incision actually opened at two spots and had to be packed for a short time. They said that it was because of the pred. For my upcoming surgery I will only be on 20mg.

Heartofwisdom how did your appointment go? are you scheduled for surgery?
