So, I had my surgery consult on Wednesday afternoon and I found out that I don't have the surgery to remove the rest of colon and close up my rectum till I'm done school at the earliest. The surgeon actually told me that I could wait up to 10 years if wanted to. That kind of surprised me! I thought that leaving my bits in would be a huge cancer risk, but apparently it's not until after the 10 year mark. Interesting. So, I'm not going to have it done any time soon..lol. I'll likely wait till after school and probably wait till after I'm married :)

That's great that it's up to you!! As slow as Canadian HC seems to be, maybe you should schedule it now so in ten years you can just walk in!!

Sounds like a good plan Cindy!
At least you now know it's not urgent!

Yes, it's nice to not have to think of more surgery for a long time. I'd wait 9 years and 11 months!

It scared me for a second when I was scrolling through the topics for threads and I saw suregry consult and then your name. (don't get me wrong I am not ok with anyone having to go through surgeries). I thought your battle you went through was over though, and for happy years ahead pain free.

I am happy though to read that you are ok!! Also that you have a choice as to when you want to have the surgery.

Oh, that's good. Really good! Wonderful that you can plan for a time that works better for you.

Mark, it is not always slow! You just have to get in the system -- then, you're set (usually).

You can't get something for nothing, you can't have freedom for free...Rush(Canada's best export ever):headbang:

In regards to the "Slow but free" comment...the surgeon actually could have gotten me in this year if I had wanted the surgery. I think it's things like MRI's, and other more common tests and surgeries that take longer to schedule.

But still....I'm glad it's free...otherwise I'd be holding on to my junk forever...and Oscar might not have come to be. I don't know how you folks in the States can afford to have babies! I could be wrong, but isn't it some astronomical number to have a baby in the hospital there?

My mom knows someone who travelled to the US while pregnant (and apparently uninsured), went into labour and there were complications...and the bills were so high that the family will not be able to pay them off in their lifetime.

I'm aware that the big things are fairly quick, when I needed an MRI they kept me as a patient even though I could have gone home, but it would have been faster if I was admitted, even then it took a week.

Hi Cindy - It's great news that you can wait a while, til you are done with school and after you get married! Do it at your own pace.

In the meantime, be well!

Hi Cindy - Just curious why they left the end of your colon and your rectum intact when you had the surgery. I had my consult today with the surgeon and he said he would be closing everything up when they take out my pouch and give me my stoma.

My surgery was an emergency and they didn't know what was going on till they got in there. They didn't want to remove it all and sew me up without my consent. I wish they had though....

Thanks for the answer. My doc said they will def sew me up unless they find something weird that would keep them from doing it.

I am excited to be able to stop wearing an extra long extra thin maxi pad for my leaking arse every day of my life!!
