Well, I haven't been on here for a while so thought I would post.
So on January 23rd last month I got a date for my surgery (a bowel resection to take out 10cm of narrowed terminal ileum) - February 23rd. Also on January 23rd - I was told that my job role was at risk of redundancy and that I was going into a 4wk consultancy period.
So irony of ironies - I lost my job and went straight into hospital. Even more ironic is that the company had just agreed to pay me for the time I have off for my operation (after a long series of meetings about my absence) - and then everyone with my job role gets made redundant.
What really hurts is I loved that job and I love the team.
Anyway, the operation went quite well, I got it done keyhole - they gave me one of the machines where you press the button yourself to administer morphine - I have to say it didn't work very well because I was so sleepy, and then when I woke up I was in agony.
The first two days were terrible. I dunno hwo they are in the US, but in UK they are obsessed about getting you out of bed ASAP. They got me out of bed less than 24 hours after my actual operation, it was excruciating, all they did was get me up and sit me in the chair next to the bed.
Not only that, they got me up again later on that same day, and I was sick (or rather, I sicked up a weird blue liquid) twice. I later found out that they never gave me anti-sickness drug because they expected me to ask. I was so spaced out I could barely remember to ask for painkillers, ffs - i did say several times I felt sick - isn't it a natural progression for a nurse to then give an anti-sickness drug?!
It started to get easier to get up myself on the 3rd day (they took out the catheter so I had to go to the toilet) - first time hurt and then after that, it got a lot easier. I think they took me off the morphine that evening - good job too, it made me very emotional, dizzy and itchy.
Once I was off the morphine and onto oral tablets, suddenly I was recovering super fast - managed to eat a tiny bit on the 4th day and managed to poop on the 5th morning I believe. I sat there and cheered to myself. XD
6th day (the 2nd March) I went home. Unfortunately, I did go backwards slightly, as I walked around more than I should have - and ended up in a lot of pain. I got out of bed to go in our living room yesterday, which was a mistake as our only bathroom is upstairs. Taking the stairs a lot didn't work, so I decided to stay in my bed for the rest of this week, because I was in way too much pain.
Anyway... now that I'm at home I get to think about the depressing prospect of looking for a new job when I really didn't want to. I am probably going to start doing that toward the end of the month.
