Surgery procedure as out-patient?

Hey guys..
I had a surgery for my CD once as an in-patient. Can anybody tell me what the procedure is as an out-patient? My GI isn't being very cooperative.. long story short I have an appointment with my surgeon next week. Does my GI have to prescribe me surgery? Or is this something my surgeon can set up for me, before or after running tests? Think she'll tell me to go down to the ER and admit myself? Thanks

The surgeon is the only one who can decide if you need surgery, however your GI might suggest to him that you need it as medication isn't working or if he has seen something on a scope that needs more surgical investigation. I can't imagine having any bowel surgery as an outpatient unless it is for a minor issue, what ru planning to have done?

Yes surgeons are the most poewrfull people in the hospital...if he thinks you need surgery he will def book you in there and then but there also very clued up on meds and class surgery in crohns as a last resort the last two times iv meet my surgeon i have been put on meds and surgery avoided... but every case different.. really depends whats wrong?

Well I've had surgery in 2010 (October) and I've never responded well to meds. I've been on trials and non-CD meds but like I said I never respond well, and sometimes badly. I'm cortisone dependent, in pain, can't work or go to school and hardly eating, nauseous all day. My whole body hurts, losing weight, and I can't even walk around the block for it hurts my gut. She performed the surgery on me last time (bowel loop and stricture) so it's the same surgeon. My doctor wants me to go on meds but non-CD meds. His nurse is a researcher and he always wants to be the first to discover everything and I'm not into more trials.
Last time I went for surgery, several weeks prior I was in pain and losing weight. After a scope and some scans, my GI said to go home and get over my phantom pains. The phantom pains, as I said, turned out to be 3 abscesses, a bowel loop and a stricture, and nobody knew what was going on until my surgeon opened me up in the OR.

Im sure they will sort you much faster this time three abscesses and a stricture must have been very painfull... if you are really suffering and in lots of pain when you see your surgeon you may get admited as a patient straight away.. but if you do get admited to hospital they will do tests scans e.t.c before they give you your treatment to determine the location and severity of your problem if they have not done so already..

Have you considered seeing a different GI? It sounds like you may have a philosophical difference with your current doc and perhaps someone different would be a better fit?

I think you are asking the difference between already being in the hospital and having surgery vs. scheduling a surgery to be performed?....

When scheduling a surgery, the surgeon will see you, then schedule a date. You should have to go to the hospital for some pre-op testing (blood work, maybe x-rays etc)...and of course paperwork. They should also talk to you about hospital stay and recovery time.....

For insurance purposes, you may need to pre-notify your insurance company, I personally would make a call myself to make sure the doctors' office made the proper notifications....never hurts!

I had outpatient surgery years ago for my knee (same day in/out scope to clean up knee).....had to have some things done beforehand.....and also an appendectomy straight from the ER which resulted in a few day hospital stay.....not too much difference besides the pre-testing.....

A surgeon can set it up for you but somewhere along the line I imagine you need a referral. Since you don't have a good relationship with your GI can you get a referral for a consult with the surgeon through your GP?

When my son required surgery, he had already seen the surgeon in hospital previously, it was the GP that did all the liaising until surgery was performed. My son had a consult in the surgeons rooms and a date for surgery was set. He then had some scans done up where we live and he then attended a pre op clinic two days before surgery, On the day of the surgery he turned up at the hospital at the allotted time and went straight into surgery via the perioperative suite. He did see the ward until he was transferred from recovery.
