The ladies may be able to relate more than the men on this one but I am preparing myself mentally, and emotionally (including what to expect aesthetically) post-surgery.

I am having a small bowel resection next week. My first resection, the surgeon was able to make a 4 inch horizontal incision at my waist where women generally have "C-section" incisions. He cut the skin horizontally but then cut the muscle vertically to get to my bowels.

When I saw the surgeon last week, he was surprised that I was able to convince him the last time (3 years ago) to make a horizontal incision. I reminded him that he agreed to it because I cried after he told me the incision/scar would be vertical and how long.

Anyway, this time he agreed that he will "start low but no guarantees" since my GI doc is also going to be present at surgery to perform an endoscopy to view my entire GI tract since camera pill failed by getting stuck.

The reason I write this is 1) to vent because surgery soon is stressing me out 2) for those who had a small bowel resection or similar surgery, did you wake up surprised with a scar larger than you expected or were told previously about?

Thanks!

With almost every surgery I have had, I've woken up with a scar twice as long as expected. My abdomen is a road map! Hahaha!

I just laugh about it though. What else can you do?

This reminded me of the conversation with the surgeon before gallbladder surgery. He was a whiz at laparoscopic surgery and was totally convinced that mine was a no-brainer. Three small incisions, outpatient surgery, no problem. I told him, nope...won't happen that way. Woke up with an 8-inch scar, traditional open surgery, and an overnight stay. Ha!

Good to know! I hope I won't have to resort to bathing suits instead of bikinis after this surgery. lol. And true, this is all superficial but it helps with self-image/esteem. The scar reminders in the mirror are brutal. I'll take remission any day over this Crohn's business though. Even with a long scar. Ugh. That was hard to write. lol.

Oh my! What a surprise! Way to laugh it up! I admire your attitude.
