Hi,
Well I did it and I'm not feeling too bad considering. They took out 10 cm of small bowel then did strictureplasty on a further 30 cm. Then he took 15cm of large bowel that had a fistula attached to my colon. That all came out. And the IC valve is gone too. I am very sore on the right side where he said it was pretty messy. Now I really hope I get through this next week without any infections. Fingers crossed.
I feel extremely tired and dizzy and can't have the morphine pump as it suppresses my breathing too much so its tramadol for me.
I'm looking forward to eating more normal food and getting on with life. Apparently I just have to fart now - excuse the language- but it will be party time then. x

Best wishes for a smooth recovery. Posting the day after surgery -- you're a superstar!

Hurray, you did it. Glad you got through it okay and for now you are in remission and all I can say to that, is enjoy, and hopefully it will be a permanent one for you.

Hope you are feeling better soon. My fingers are crossed for you to have a healthy recovery and no infections.
Happy farting :stinks:

Surgery

Thanks heaps for your warm wishes.
Today I'm pretty sore. I'm getting stabbing pains in my right side which is where the surgeon did a lot of the work. I'm hoping it's just wind. I still haven't farted. How long does it take to fart after surgery? Anyone know? They said I should have done one yesterday so I'm starting to panic.
Can't believe also the waves of tiredness that hit you. One minute your talking away the next your eyes have closed.
Anyway, lets hope I fart soon .............

Glad you are here and your surgery is over. It takes a few days, to blow wind, if you are not moving or sitting up , you may not for a bit. Everyone is different. Dont worry it takes time to heal... rest is so important! Happy Farting!

Hi butafli

Take your time! I recovered at a different pace from all the ops i had.
Don't worry about farting, it will happen, but remember your gut has just had a MAJOR shock.
Recover in your own time.
I hope your quality of life improves when you get back on your feet.

Best Wishes

I have been up and have walked 4 x round the corridor today and been sitting in the chair. However, my nurse has tucked me back into bed and told me to rest now. And I was instantly tired when my head hit the pillow. There is obviously a balance between moving and rest.
Thanks again for your thoughts and advice. I really enjoy this forum. It makes me feel like I'm not alone when going through such a major operation.

Oh the surgeon just came in and said it was very messy inside with the bowel attached to the front wall, the back wall and to itself too. When you hear that sort of thing you know you have done the right thing.

Hi ButaFli thats good going that ure up ad about i was in hospital 6 days and couldnt walk till the 3rd and even then it was far!! I am on week 2 now I think? and am still getting pain but comfortable at home, taking it one day at a time. Hi ButaFli,

Matt has just had surgery and like sugarbunny started farting on day 4 post op, day 1 being the day after surgery. I know they ask everyday but I reckon they are being optimistic expecting you to start that early on! Good luck with your recovery, I hope it is speedy and uneventful.

All the best,

Best Wishes for a quick recovery that leads to a lifetime with less pain and more happiness.I love how the word "fart, farting" can be used on a community board where everyone UNDERSTANDS and there is no judgement. geesh that is awesome. Sending you gentle hugs and healing toughts. the fact that you typed ur story after surgery is amazing, what a fabulous inspiration.

Glad the surgery went well and hope your recovery goes smoothly!

Have you farted yet??!?!

Good luck! - Amy

Hi. I just farted!!!! Yay. However today has been a crap day. I have a UTI from the catheter and it's making me feel like crap. Never had one before but it sux. I'm hoping I don't have an "accident". Was thinking that its quite a big possibility.
My tummy is feeling very bloated as I need to fart more and I think the pain and bloating in my bladder is making things feel a bit worse.
I fainted trying to have a shower today. Not a nice experience. It could all have something to do with my haemaglobin is only 90 and my iron is only 2. But hopefully now my bowel is better I will start absorbing some good foods.
So here's to tomorrow and a better day I say.
Thank you all so much for you support. It means the world to me.
x

Hi, it's been a week now since I last posted and I am feeling pretty good. But still have a few questions for the surgeon. Someone out there may be able to answer a couple. I am a wee bit worried as I still am getting pain in my stomach after eating and drinking. I know you will be thinking to yourselves "It's been less than 10 days since surgery, of course there is going to be pain". But since Ive never been down this track before I guess I thought I wouldn't get any. Is the pain I'm feeling all part of my wounds healing and my insides getting back to normal? Also I have chronic diarrhea at night starting around 9.30pm. And if it doesn't happen at night it is sometime in the early hours and it
s very painfully crampy until I go......... will this all settle down?
i know I'm probably trying to "be right" too soon and I should be patient. But it would be great to hear other peoples stories or experiences after surgery.
I am eating small meals and still am steering away from the fibrous foods and gassy foods.
the great news is that I'm already down to 10mg pred. I'm also on 4000mg Pentasa but am hoping I will be able to drop this soon. My specialist wants to put me on azathioprine as a remission drug. Any opinions on this??
I'm heading home on Sunday to my 3 little kiddies. Can't wait to be able to cuddle them and smell them and feel them. God Ive missed them!!!
Thanks for listening people. As I've said before, it's great to have you on board.

Hi butafli,

The crampy pain.....yep had it after both of my resections.
The crohnic 'D' - i found that it took months to settle down.At first it was awful,it took at least 3 months to 'settle down'.
Due to the bowel i lost i've had to take loperamide for 13 years now.
I think everybody who has had resections will give differing advice as we all react in a different way.
Wish you well - be patient as things will improve for you.

Hi Butafli - Make sure you are staying plenty hydrated!

Did they give you infusions in the hosp to bring up your iron levels? A 2 is very low!!!

If the pain continues, I would discuss with your doc. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck and I hope you have a quick successful recovery!

Hi All,
It's now week 3 and I'm ok. Still very tired and sore. Making the most of my husband being home for this and next week as it's back to reality after that. I am finding I can do most things that don't require heavy lifting or turning around quickly. I had quite a large meal last night and I think I'm paying for it. Where I was getting all my stricture pain pre surgery is the site I'm getting my pain now. I'm hoping it's just the cut and pasting they have done there still healing.
My "D" is ok. It's manageable but I wouldn't want to go too far away from a loo for very long.
I am sooooo enjoying being able to eat things I couldn't before but I probably need to take it all a bit slower with all of that too. I have to keep reminding myself that it's still all healing.
Hope you are all ok.

After only 3 weeks, it sounds like you are doing pretty good! That is wonderful news you are enjoying your old favorite foods again. But like you said, you better take is slow as you are still healing.

Thanks for the update. I hope you continue to feel better and better!

Hi Everyone
I'm a little over a month post resection now and I have a concern I'm hoping someone can try to figure out for me before I go to the specialist. I have gurgling again on my right side and a niggly tugging type pain there too. I don't feel I'm blocking up at all. But it is so scary to think something could be happening so soon after surgery. The surgeon seemed very sure he had removed all the diseased bowel. Could it be just the healing process still? I mean it is only a month!!
