My daughter stared out taking 40 mg for 10 days, then she is to taper down to 30 mg for 10 days and then 20 mg. Is it customary to taper down by 10 mg? She just read that 5 mg is the usual amount to be tapered down at a time. Thank you in advance for your responses!

I have seen 10mg tapers but 5mg tapers every 5-7 days is the usual in my experience.

I can't remember what I did last time, but i think Dusty is right and it was 5mg every 7 days.
If she can handle the drops by 10mg, i.e her symptoms don't suddenly come back really badly then it will be better because she won't be on them for so long.
Just make sure you keep in contact with your GI. They can change the tapering plan if they need to.

She is really scared about the 10mg drops. I guess we will have to see how it goes. Thank you for the replies!

I am typically on a 5mg taper, but in the past I have been on much higher amounts where I tapered larger does than you mention. Right now, I'm doing something different (also with my dr's direction, of course) to get off pred and to try something else. My point being, what's typical isn't always the only way.

If she is concerned about it, there's no reason not to give a call to her doctor, in my opinion. I would certainly do what the doctors says over what you might think is typical. Discussing this with the doc might allay some of her fears and maybe help you better understand the course your doctor chose.

And, not to sound preachy, but try to help her relax. She might not like pred - few of us do - but she's on it presumably because the her doctor deemed that the downsides outweigh the relief I hope she's getting from it.

She is in the process of looking for a new GI because she does not trust this doctors judgment unrelated to the prednisone. He has made it clear to her that she is not to question anything in relation to her treatment. She is fine with taking the prednisone, she just asked me to see what others experiences were with tapering.

My 16 year old daughter started on Prednisone, last Friday at 30mg, two weeks at 30mg, then tapper of 5mg per week. We even had the Chemist tell us that doctors usually go for a lower strength tablet when you get to 5mg and to make sure we ask about it.

I don't think this is right. She is going to have to learn how to deal with this for the rest of her life, I think she has every right to question him. Even if questioning him leads to the same outcome. She needs to understand her treatment and be comfortable with it. (or as comfortable as you can be in difficult situations).

I think you are right to try and find a new GI, especially if your daughter is not comfortable with him. There shouldn't be anything wrong with discussing treatment plans and highlighting concerns.

Good Luck!

You should be able to ask questions and your doc should be able to elaborate his or her decisions, IMO. Sounds like a bit of insecurity or overconfidence? Please tell your daughter not to sweat it. The right doc is out there for you. The right doc makes all the difference, IMO.
