Hey everyone! I am currently going to school to be a teacher and I am still a bit nervous about teaching and Crohns. Any advice? How do you handle needing to go to the bathroom while at work? Being on immune suppressants and being around sick children? I really feel like this is my calling but I also want to be able to do my job effectively without my disease getting in the way!

Welcome to the forum! I am all for you following your dream and becoming a teacher. Being that I am more of a constipated nature, the inability to have quick access to a bathroom isn't an issue for me in the classroom. Sometimes, getting your body used to a schedule might be a help. That's what I like to do- I know that if I have a bowel movement in the morning before I leave to teach, I'll be fine. As for the part about the germs, I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer next to me and use it quite often:)
Good luck with it and I'm sure you'll be great.

One thing you can do to prevent getting sick is to always make sure you never touch your face, mouth etc, or any foods you are going to eat while at school( at least until you can wash your hands first). This will help cut down on your getting sick. Also always have a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you ( with at least 70% alcohol in it). I use purell. It is good against colds and some flu's. It will not protect against the stomach or intestinal viruses though, for that hand washing is necessary.

This is an important issue. After my Ph D, I hope to take up a teaching and research job and access to the bathroom is an issue that bothers me. Last May, I taught a few MBA classes, and thankfully, everything was okay. I also give presentations of duration one hour or longer; occasionally urgency issues have cropped up. I have one on Friday. Hoping to get a fix for this. Taking an anticholinergic once a day helps, I think. Regards and best wishes to all of you.

The older the children, the less exposure to infections. You can try to avoid touching your face and wash your hands a lot but you still may be exposed to respiratory diseases that spread by coughing. You might want to talk to your doctor about this.

That is a great age! Teach your students to cough/sneeze in a way that won't spread germs around the whole classroom and you can never go wrong by washing your hands. It would probably be helpful to make sure that you get the flu shot as well. My doctor insists that I get it. He says especially since I teach, I need to protect myself.
