Full ArticleIndividuals with short bowel syndrome (SBS) are some of the most challenging patients for health care practitioners to manage. In addition to complex fluid, electrolyte and nutritional issues, clinicians must also treat ongoing medical problems and facilitate the administration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Appropriate attention to these issues can significantly improve the quality of-life for a patient with SBS. This article is intended to provide the clinician with a logical, stepwise approach toward maximizing the potential of the remaining bowel of an adult patient with SBS in order to reduce or eliminate the use of TPN or intravenous (IV) therapy.
