Hi all, new here, Crohns since 2004 - 2 Bowel resections been on a ton of tablets for years and have recently hit the gym and stopped all tablets(doc does not know yet) feel better than ever but was wondering about supplements. I want to take

whey protein
glutamine
BCAA
strong multi vitamin
milk thistle
Creatine

My diet is very high protein, low carb which i think is a major factor in my sudden well being. Anybody any ideas on above?

Thanks
K

Welcome to the forum. I take whey protein and I mix glutamine powder in my shakes (when I get the chance to workout) and I take a multi vitamin as well.
When you say you stopped taking all tablets, I'm assuming you mean your crohn's med?

Hi Kieran and welcome!

What meds were you on before that you decided to stop? And just wondering why you decided to stop?

Glad you are feeling better and I hope it keeps up! Please be careful about suddenly stopping any meds. IMO it's better to be on maintenance meds and feeling good than to have a flare up and have to pull out the big guns!

Can't offer much advice on the supplements listed above, but if you might want to add in some antiinflammatory supplements, like fish or krill oil, turmeric/curcumin, ginger, bromelain, etc.

Good luck! -Amy

Hi Kieran, welcome! Milk thistle is often mentioned in naturo treatments for the liver. Why have you chosen that one??

Hi Kieran, welcome! Milk thistle is often mentioned in naturo treatments for the liver. Why have you chosen that one??

It would be a common addition to an athletes diet, high in protein. Meds, plus supps, plus all that protein = harsh on liver enzymes. Milk thirsle has been shown to decrease liver enzymes in these situations.

Personally I think everything you mentioned is ok. The only thing I would question is the creatine. That can cause problems for some of us. You shouldn't need it to put on some muscle. IMO

don't stop your tabs! from my experience I tried it once- hit the gym and stopped the tabs after 6 months of supposedly feeling great, I flared terribly and now after 12 months I still can't see myself out of my flare!!!

Ok firstly thanks.
I'm back on my meds as U are all right!! Still feeling good tho.

AMY - I'm taking Mercaptopurine, pentasa, motilium, omeprezale and tramadol when required(not for a while now - I hate it) I know I probably shouldnt have stopped but u know how it is, feeling good, want to forget ure ill sometimes........

MR IZZY - yea the creatine is fine - Protein is the one that is worrying but see how it goes.

ALL - I have done a bit of research and there appears to be alot of evidence to suggest that glutamine is very good for us so win win with that one.

Thanks again. Let u all know how it goes and when I look like The Hulk LOL

Go with whey protein. It shouldn't give you problems - its very easily digested. Almost 100% it should be ok. If not you can still try egg white protein powder, casein protein powder, GMO protein powder, soy protein powder, or brown rice protein powder. If all those give you problems, then its not that you can't digest those things, its that your body can't handle the amount of protien you're taking. Yes glutamine speeds up recovery of muscles, so they theoretically grow faster. These anti inflammatory properties, are also proven in studies to heal us to some extent. Fish oil too. You shouldn't need milk thirstle as I doubt your are taking enough protein to raise your liver enzymes to high. Ask your GI what your last ALT, AST, and Albumin were. If they were high out of range, it means your liver need detox, in which you would start the milk thirstle.

you all have such helpgul things to say
